All that's been confirmed is that it's set in the Prime universe, so has no connection the the new films.

The style of deflector dish certainly suggests to me that it's set in the original movie era at the very earliest, as before that ships has weird satellite dish things rather than glowing blueness.

EDIT: It could well be that Discovery was originally built pre-TOS, but has just been refitted at that asteroid.

I'm watching TOS on Netflix for the first time and Kirk does not appear to be a competent captain. He had one good moment in The Corbomite Maneuver but that aside it's been nothing but blunders and getting his crew killed.

What a terrible starship and to have a hanger inside an asteroid? Definitely not set after Voyager in the 24th century and beyond.
I am so disappointed with them going back in time. That is what made Enterprise suck so much...no shields, phasers, proper torpedoes, proper transporters....

I'm not really sure his crew getting killed is his fault. They chose the red shirt life.

Could be set after the collapse of the Federation. This being the federations last hope or something similar. Hence why it looks like a missmatch of old Human and Klingon tech.

I could definitely see it being a hybrid Human/Klingon tech ship, but if so I think it'll be set between Enterprise and TOS and that the show will have some stupid, unbearable Section 31 related edgelord plot. I hope I'm wrong. :(

CBS All Access' 'Star Trek: Discovery' to Be Captained By a Woman

The CBS All Access reboot will be putting a new spin on Captain Kirk with the central character played by a woman.

CBS All Access' upcoming Star Trek: Discovery will be putting a new spin on its Captain Kirk character.

The Bryan Fuller-led series will be captained by a woman, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, with the role potentially also being diverse. A formal announcement on that and additional details about the series are expected to be revealed Wednesday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour. It's unclear if the central character will actually be a captain, though that would certainly make the most sense.

Sources tell THR the rest of the cast will also feature an openly gay actor play one one of the male leads, a female admiral, a male Klingon captain, a male admiral, a male adviser and a British male doctor.

Set in the prime universe (yay) 10 years before Kirk's mission (damn):
In a teaser video, Fuller is quoted saying, “We’re telling a Star Trek novel over 13 episodes,” which hints at a very serialized storyline instead of an episodic one.

– Fuller on stage now: “There’s an incident and and event in Star Trek history, that’s been talked about but never been explored. To do this series, we’re telling a much more serialized story, to dig deep into a very tantalizing [storyline. And we have a character who’s on a journey, and in order to understand something that is alien she first has to understand herself.”

– Somebody asks if there will be robots. Fuller says, “Yes.”

– Star Trek: Discovery to be set in the “Prime universe” (so the original timeline, not the J.J. Abrams reboot timeline) about 10 years before Captain Kirk’s mission. “We can redefine the visual style,” he said.

– On casting a diverse cast: “Star Trek started with a wonderful expression of diversity in its cast … our lead of the show is going to be subject of that same level, of who’s the best actor and also what can we say about diversity on the show. We’ll probably have a few more aliens than you typically have on the show. We wanted to paint a picture of Starfleet where we’re going to have new exciting aliens and also new imagining of existing aliens.” Fuller noted some of the changes might upset hardcore fans used to seeing things a certain way. “We’re producing the show in 2016. We have to update the style of the effects, the style of the sets, the style of the makeup.”

– Gay characters? “Absolutely we’re having a gay character,” Fuller said. He noted that as a gay man working on Voyager he had a file full of hate mail when there was a rumor that a character on his show was going to be gay. So he was determined if he ever did his own Star Trek show that he would have a gay character.

– Marc DeBevoise, president and COO of CBS Interactive points out that he expects Star Trek: Discovery to get about 15 million viewers for its series premiere on CBS. He noted that Star Trek TV shows tend to average 2-to-5 million viewers for their first two years as reruns on Netflix. “We think this is a pretty good bet for us to make to grow our subscriber base next year,” he said.

At least it's not too far before Kirk, so you still get the cool Trek tech. I wonder which event it's going to be about though?

I'm not much of a Star Trek fan, but wasn't one of the earlier series captained by a woman? How is that news?

Hm, 10 years before Kirk means the Enterprise itself is still around, Kirk's first mission started in 2265, but the Enterprise itself was launched in 2245. Captain Pike will have been the Captain around 2255, he was Captain from 2251-2265 I think.

Looking through a timeline, the only real event I can find that occurred around 2255 was the signing of a treat with the Sheliak.

And Voyager had a female Captain, so it's hardly something new.

I'm just happy there's a new series so I'm not bothered if the captain is a woman or it's set before the Kirk era.
I just hope it's story driven with a decent series long (or even better a multi series story) story and not just monster of the week type shows.

Why are they suddenly so keen to be seen as progressive. Star Trek has always been one of the most progressive shows on TV with an incredibly diverse cast. They don't need to be shouting from the roof tops about stuff that has already been done in previous series.

Bit sad that this sounds like another prequel frankly. I'd much rather they moved forwards another 100 years from TNG. Can't say I ever felt compelled to see the gap filled between Enterprise and TOS.

I am not going to lie hearing it confirmed to be pre-tos has really killed all the hype I have for this. Probably all to do with how much I hated Enterprise, still will check it out, but I am not expecting much anymore.

Announcing you'll have a diverse cast is just part of the standard marketing spiel for new shows nowadays. There was no risk of this not being progressive - it's Star Trek after all - but it's fine that they've said it. I don't see a problem with that.

It sounds more like total shite every time I hear anything about it though.

It sounds like total gooseberry fool until you think of BRYAN FULLER, and then you wonder how it could ever be rubbish with him in charge.
