I think the keyword is rumours, but even so, the facts that are there are certainly not pretty

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Beams Up Rainn Wilson As Conman Harry Mudd

“Office space?” Rainn Wilson has boarded CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery as a character known to fans of the original series. The Office alum, who earned three Emmy noms for his role as Dwight Schrute, will play conman and intergalactic criminal Harry Mudd,

Roger C. Carmel originated the character, aka Harcourt Fenton Mudd, in the 1960s Star Trek series, appearing in one episode of each of the first two seasons. He would reprise the role in a 1973 episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series.

As soon as I heard that it was not set after Voyager I was immediately disappointed. I really don't care about anything in the Original series timeline with their rubbish outdated technology. Why do they keep going backwards?

Yeah I agree with this. Why do they seem to have decided that the star trek timeline ended with the voyager finale.

I'm less bothered about the technology than I am about the overall story and ship being decent.

How can their ship be decent if they don't even have proper shields and can't travel faster than warp 6 or something. Will we ever get back to Trance warp/quantum slip stream etc? O and manually targeted transporters wtf?

They're probably trying to flesh out the continuity. Let viewers begin with the first warp-capable Enterprise and watch until their eyes fall out.

Thing is they never did a proper arc show that modern TV would allow them to do, DS9 was kinda there, but were only allowed a 6 episode major event, Voyager was not even allowed to go that far. So Now that they can go and do it, it is stunning that they wont. Instead they keep going back to prequels which have proven to be unpopular and convoluted. I am guessing it is a prequel again due to how well the Star Trek reboot did, but even that doesn't make sense if they are not using that time line.

I still think you're worrying about the wrong aspect.
They could set this in the 56th century with pretty much Q-like powers but if the overall story and look of the show is gooseberry fool it won't matter.
Get the story right and the lack of technology while a bit annoying will soon be forgotten.

I think the main problem is that Voyager completely strawberry floated the series by having Janeway bring back technology from the future and destroying the greatest enemy the Federation has ever faced in the Borg.
In theory the Federation then has an insurmountable advantage against all the other local region powers who were basically at the same technological level as the Federation. They had painted themselves into a massive corner with no decent ways to go as either the Federation decides to not use this technology even if attacked (the other powers in the sector would no doubt know they have this future tech and want it badly enough to try an invasion) because of some odd version of the Prime Directive which they regularly ignore anyway or they simply use it and laugh maniacally as they completely flatten any and all opponents stupid enough to bother attacking our new super starships.

While I'd be all for a version of Star Trek set on Braxton's Time Ship and about the adventures of the time agency as a whole using the ending of Voyager is a horrible idea as it was just a flaming pile gooseberry fool with regards to the overall Trek universe.

This may be one of my most thought through posts in my entire time here which is maybe kind of worrying when I think about it  .

I don't think they necessarily painted themselves into a corner. A ton of the Milky Way is still unexplored so there could easily be something bigger and badder out there.
And then you've got threats from other galaxies as well.

Would love Star Trek to do something like the Tyranids from Warhammer. The Borg were originally meant to be an insectoid race until budget constraints forced them to scrap the idea.

Hell, they could even just adapt Star Trek Online into a show. That's had some pretty good plot arcs set in a post-Nemesis Federation.

Just have the very first episode of Star Trek: Relativity be Braxton murdering the gooseberry fool out of Janeway and retconning the end of Voyager.

As a Trek fan this would be so, so cathartic.

I'm sold. Fantastic idea and it gives them scope to go anywhere and anytime. If they want episodes in early days of warp they can without tying whole show to that idea.

So I'd been slowly rewatching Deep Space Nine, a few episodes here and there while I got through the "meh" first and second seasons. They're not terrible, but there's just not very much of interest happening beyond the occassional episode that hints at what's to come. Just lots of let play "Who's going to befriend the wormhole alien this week?".

Then with the start of Season 3 I began watching it everyday. The show begins to pick up with some genuinely great episodes and leads into Season 4.

Season 4 is like a completely different show. The writing improves immeasurably. The series arc is put front and centre. Characters grow beyond your typical Star Trek "Best aspects of humanity" mould into real people with issues and real relationships beyond being automatically best friends with each other.

Just waiting for the Klingon arc to pass so we can get full speed into the Dominion War. Best Trek by a mile. Absolutely love it.

You could very easily skim through the first 3 seasons of DS9 and only start seriously watching with series 4 and you'd be pretty much up to date.

The only worthwhile episode I can think if from the first 2 series is The Jem'hadar since it basically sets up the entire rest of the show.

Totally. The first two seasons especially are very light in terms of episodes that you need to watch. Three is mostly decent as it answers some questions about Odo, sets up the Dominion and the Founders as proper adversaries and has some good two parters. The finale "The Adversary" really sets the tone for the coming seasons as well.

Then Season 4 opens up with "Way of the Warrior" and never stops from there. It's the point where it really begins to come into it's own and for me it's the start of the best Star Trek episodes.

You don't want to miss Sisko punching Q though.

It was already outdone by the player kneeing him in the balls in Star Trek Borg.
