Yeah I have to be honest and say this is pretty bad so far. Really disappointed because I sort of just assumed it was going to be guaranteed 7/10 quality, but it feels some way off that.

I do have to give the show credit for me being here in a Star Trek thread. I enjoyed Enterprise and I think one of the reboot films, not seen much mind you and have basically no understanding of the universe except I know what a Klingon and Vulcan is.

I really like the the series so far but last night's episode was odd. It wasn't the death or the Musk line that worried me, although both were clangers, more the idea of a starship powered by a giant bug. It's obviously a reference to the Navigators from Dune, (less of a reference more of a carbon copy) but it's really not working for me. Disconcerting when it's the focal point of the the series.

Does anyone else feel like the show moves too fast because the running time of each episode is too short? I just find myself wishing each one was an hour so it would slow down.

This week's episode was the first proper misstep, that death scene was so weird

It's 45 minutes then? It does seem like a show more suited to 1hr.. I barely notice the difference between 45 mins and 1hr.

Honestly netflix is so poisonous I could go hours without even realising how long each episode really is.. especially when you inevitably end up watching "just the first 5 minutes" of the next episode.

I think it's because I've been watching a lot of actual netflix originals, and also HBO shows which are usually an hour, and I do think I notice the difference. Discovery could do with a bit of decompression.

I mean, I don't miss the 15 minutes and this would benefit from more character development and exposition. At times it feels like a really long trailer for stuff that's happened, before you've really ingested it has happened, or stuff happens that just jumps forward and doesn't make a great deal of sense like the tardigrade. I'm definitely sold on the long form streaming content, you can really settle into a show and then really walk away. Although that makes binging more dangerous it's overall more satisfying especially for a weekly release schedule.

Maybe they felt like people wouldn't have time for it since older Treks were no way near as long, but that's mad considering how avid the fanbase is.

Edit:I'm completely wrong, TNG was exactly 44 minutes. Maybe that's why. I had no idea and watched it just the other day. Time is a weird thing. It's a LOT slower moving.

All of the episodes so far would have been two-parters in TNG, and would have been split up by at least one monster-of-the-week ep. It was a very differently paced show for sure.

Watched all 4 episodes last night, think it's really good. I hope it keeps up with the action side of things.

I'm a bit put off by the whole ship being powered by this organic matter and a big bug. Obviously though the technology can't work out long term as it doesn't appear in the future timeline.

Don't you remember the classic TNG episode where Data's cat controls the Enterprise-D warp core? Why else do you think Picard would allow a cat in engineering?

It was just such a great show, it had this fantastic mix of genuinely good sci-fi but also comedy and really endearing slice-of-life. You never knew if you were going to get philosophy, action, something funny, or just the crew messing around, but no matter what happened it was always entertaining.

I think this is why I don't mind Season 2 as much as some people; for me even a lot of the bad eps were fun. I only disliked Season 1 because the characters hadn't found their voices yet.
