I think it's having a mid-season break. Yeah I was totally expecting her to regain consciousness too.

Mid season finale. I doubt the admiral is dead, just did a convincing job of making them think she was dead.

The series goes on a Christmas break and returns next year with 6 more episodes.

Ok I didn’t realise it was a mid season break. Thought it was just a short season. I think I was getting mixed up having read that it was renewed for a second season so I thought the after Christmas stuff was the second season.

Just started watching this and it seems pretty decent so far.

I like the darker, grittier tone of everything but I'm finding the swearing rather jarring at times as it seems so out of place in Star Trek.

Eh, if they'd thought they could have gotten away with it in the earlier series, they would have had swearing in those too. After all, Data swore in Generations.

This is the extra freedom that streaming allows.

I don't think they wanted to get away with it in the earlier series though, the earlier series were generally a little more family oriented.
TNG did experiment with being more adult oriented early on, I mean look at the Season 1 esisode where Remmick's head explodes and you're then treated to his ribcage dissolving and a nice shot of the hollow shell of his torso, but they felt it was too "Un-Star Trek" and dropped it.
Thing is you can still do serious without having to start dropping F-bombs to show how cool and edgy you are.

Personally I find use of the word "strawberry float" in Star Trek to be just off putting. Yeah Daa used the word "gooseberry fool" in Generations but at the time it was basically an unwritten requirement in Hollywood to justify your PG rating by dropping that word in there, it ended up in a bunch of kids films. Hell it was even in Transformers. It was basically a product of the time, though in Generations it kind of worked because it was supposed to be another signifier of Data becoming more human and exploring things he never would/could have done before. Besides, I think using "Oh gooseberry fool" when you're about to crash half a starship into a planet is rather more justified than "So strawberry floating cool" because you've done something it was your job to do anyway.

I didn't mind the use of swearing as it was in context as I'd most likely swear if I discovered something like how the Spore Drive works.

I'm sure this has already been discussed, but it is amazing how better The Orville is compared to this.
In my opinion, so far Discovery has an incredibly dull main character, forced romances, cliche characters and stories that try too hard to be "star trekkie".

It's okay (and good visuals of course), but it's like a 5 compared to an 8.

Wow brilliant episode, gripped throughout.

I did not expect to see Klingon nipples though

I’m a bit confused about the last part though. I really hope that they haven’t ended up in an alternate reality and it’s going to be about the discovery trying to get home ala Voyager.

Pinching this from elsewhere but all the "One last jump" stuff was definitely coming across like this

I don't think there's any chance of that.
They will be in an alternate reality but only for a few episodes to set up a series long story about a connection between realities and then somehow get back to the main reality. I hope they've travelled to the mirror universe as they already have a pretty decent set-up and lore for that seeing it from another time period is always fun.

We do know all alternate universes have evil beards though so expect them to make an appearance  .

Seeing as they namedropped Spock in episode 6 are we likely to see the original Enterprise (captained by Kirk) at some point or is this set before the Enterprise is built.

strawberry float the haters, that was absolutely cracking. Apart from the Klingon sex. That was gross. :dread:

It seemed like a scene out of Species.

I have a potential theory that Lorca deliberately caused the jump to stop in a different reality. The reason I'm not sure. Maybe the reality they ended up in is actually the main star trek universe and the one we've been watching all along was actually a different reality.

There were too many hints about it throughout the episode. Also he did something odd on his jump pad next to his chair when they made the jump.

30 minutes into the episode: "Are they actually going to say he strawberry floated a Klingon or are they just going to imply it?"

40 minutes into the episode: "Oh."

1x09- I liked the episode but they had a perfect opportunity to do a big reveal for the mid-season break and they fumbled it.

Maybe it was an elaborate way to bring back the Discovery's crew after they somehow got killed in the 'true' reality.
