*Googles Ichiban*

Ichiban (一番) means 'number 1' in Japanese. The Japanese language has numerous numeric suffixes that are used depending on the subject matter;[1] "-ban" is only one of many ways to turn "ichi" ("one") into "first".

I see why some found humour in his name.

PostRe: New Yakuza Series Project - Starring Ichiban Kasuga - Nagoshi gives a bit of general insight on new game+OG Yakuza
by Saint of Killers » Tue Aug 14, 2018 6:31 am

There's a long feature on Toshihiro Nagoshi and his games in the latest issue of Edge. He talks about the original Yakuza and the latest game.

New Yakuza Project:

It will still be quite hardcore at the beginning, but I want the player to think "Oh this game seems really interesting" - that's what I'm aiming for this time. That goes for the technology too, though I don't want to say more as it will spoil the fun. By introducing a new and more current systems, I'd like to increase the number of players. And if I do that, I can re-introducing Kiryu-san to some new fans. That would be ideal.

Yakuza 1:

It became difficult for Japanese companies to compete with western games of high quality and big budgets (...) if we wanted to do, it would have to be sports, or military, or fantasy (...)and it would need to release worldwide. (...) since everyone was thinking the same things, everyone was making similar games (laughs).
But I thought it wasn't right to follow that direction. So, first, I abandoned the idea of selling worldwide. Next, I decided I wouldn't mind if female players didn't like the game; then that no children were allowed. When I decided all that, the only target left was the japanese male.

My bosses took some convincing. I did a presentation twice, and didn't get approval. (...)
Sega was struggling for cash and was very close to bankruptcy, so it merged with Sammy. As soon as it happened, I went to see the new owner and presented the game to him, looking for his approval. Professionally, this was highly irregular and quite wrong. But I knew if the owner said "yes", it would be good for the entire company. (...)
I got his approval, but our CEO was really mad about it (laughs). He said it was unfair.

I've never said this before, but while we released this game with Sony, I'd done presentations about it to Microsoft and Nintendo. Back then they said "No we don't want it." Now they say, "We want it!" (laughs) They didn't understand the reason why I created it.

I'm often asked how I did all the research, but it's Japanese culture (...) but I did some of my own, yes. I like drinking. I also like women. I was having lots of fun in my life for a long time - whether to shake off my stress from work, or deepen the connection with my subordinates. (...) I learned a lot of interesting stories from the people I met. And some surprising stories, and some sad ones. They became elements of Yakuza's story. The name Kiryu is one of them (...). I often do that in my games - I use the name of a person I liked or who looked after me well. I still do that today.

Jeez, I've only just gotten into the series from the beginning with Yakuza 0 - at this rate I'll never catch up. Also I wonder if this resurgence in popularity might mean the historical Edo period spinoff games will finally get localised to the west.

Some fans seem to think that's just one Yakuza too many. I like to think, that, if there's ever a lull in Yakuza games, they'll think about a western release of Ishin. Maybe next gen?

Yakuza series general director on Ichiban Kasuga game: “I’d like to change the game drastically”

Read more at https://gematsu.com/2019/03/yakuza-seri ... 0tyQLU7.99

Given that the game is in the action adventure genre, I’d like to change the game drastically. We’ve tried changing things in past titles, though our audiences often claimed it to be “minor changes.” This time, we want our change to feel like an online game would become from version 1.0 to 2.0, not just another big patch. This process takes time.

We released Judgment a little while ago, and that too was part of the experimentation for this change. The energy we’re pouring into this is on par with how hard we tried to make the first Yakuza. We’re looking forward to the day you can be surprised by that change.

Switching the main character from Kiryu Kazuma to Kasuga Ichiban also was a good idea for this change. If the personality differs, the objective changes, if the objective changes, the game itself changes. They speak differently, and they think and act differently.

Changing the main character would open up new paths and help change the notion of “it’s a Yakuza game right? You just walk around a city right?”,that many have.

We want to use this change of main characters in the best way possible. When it comes to the story, before we had many scene that we’re teary or made you and the main character infuriated at something. This time, we’re thinking about putting in more comedic and goofy scenes that connect into the end, which has an impact of the player’s emotions.

I know, I know  :( I just feel burned out on it. 0, Kiwami and 6 were all flipping amazing, but Kiwami 2 came too soon for me. I will get around to it.

I'm doing a last trawl of the side missions i missed when going through the story of kiwami 1 and i think i'm done with it - the yakuza games are one of the few series i love now but i am definitely taking a break before kiwami 2 as i don't want to get burned out on the series.

:o

The official YouTube account for Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has uploaded a new video titled “ryu_new_0401” showing footage of what appears to be the new Yakuza game starring Ichiban Kasuga.

The footage, as Japanese media points out, appears to indicate that the next Yakuza game is a command-based RPG. Today is April Fools’ Day in Japan, meaning that this information is likely false.

Can’t wait for this, although would prefer kazuma kiryu as the protagonist. Even multiple characters like in yakuza 4 and 5 would do me. We really need those remasters for 3, 4 and 5 over here and i am sure it will get a spring 2020 release.

I'd have to disagree there, I think it's time we had some fresh blood in the series. I've only played 0/1/2 with a smidge of 5, so I've had pretty much nothing but Kiryu's one-note stoicism. As funny as it is to see just how tired he is of everyone's wacky gooseberry fool, I'd like to see someone with a bit more flavour.

Don't get me wrong, I adore Kiryu. But 15 years is a long time for one man to carry a franchise.

15 years is nothing. Look at Mario, Master Chief etc etc

Yeah, I think it's the right time for Yakuza to have a new main character.

Unsure about the turn based combat. I’m surprised they have kept with the numbering and not gone for a new series title.

Neither are they as they've stated future games may revert to old style depending on feedback.
