I suppose at least Walmart can't ruin Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI reveals now.

I'm assuming that must have had something to do with them announcing both games so early.

Apparently TES6 is in pre-production, so basically 2022 if we're lucky.

I think Bethesda got tired of people asking about it so put out the teaser just as a way of saying "Jesus! Okay, we've started making another Elder Scrolls. Now stop bugging us."

The talk of Starfield being a 'next-gen' game also indicates it will not be out next year and is more likely to see the light of day 2020 when new consoles are rolling out.

So the TES6 reveal was the same as when Nintendo announced Metroid Prime 3, when in fact all they had actually done was write the name on a napkin and say, "yes."

I'd imagine so. It's got to be really early in the first year at the latest or it's not going to be out for well over 3 years and that would annoy people quite a bit.

So Bethesda are going to launch a new Elder Scrolls game on brand new hardware bought by eager early adopters.

Is... Is there a legal limit on how many bugs are allowed to exist in all video games at any one time because I think we might need to some legislation passing here.

As a reminder, Oblivion (floating paintbrushes and all) launched on the Xbox 360 (RROD and all) 4 months after the 360 launched.

If there isn't a law after that, there never will be.

A titbit of Elder Scrolls VI news that reveals they are actually making the game and what will be the level of detail for the character models!

Shirley Curry is an 82-year old American woman sometimes known as the Gaming Grandma who has a YouTube channel dedicated to her passion - playing Skyrim. To honour her Bethesda have revealed that they will be making her a character in the TES: VI. They are using photogrammetry technology to scan her into the game, and from what I can see it means an accurate recreation of the face and not, what I assume Skyrim had, artist made character models.

They've also confirmed that neither the new Elder Scrolls nor Starfield will be at E3.

Which begs the question... Just what on earth will they be showing?

I just hope they've finally seen sense and are using a new engine otherwise games like Cyberpunk 2077 are going to come out years before it and going to blow it out of the water.
I really want Elder Scrolls 6 to be amazing and I'm likely going to Pre-order it as soon as it's on sale (I know, I'm part of the problem :fp: ) as Skyrim was just so gosh darn fantastic but if we see previews and it's obvious they're still using the same basic tech that's powered these games for a few generations now it just won't cut it any more.

Next gen games need to look and play like actual next gen games and they can't just live off the good will gained from Skyrim forever.

Character models are easily the worst aspect of Skyrim, if they end up looking as good as the above image that would be a major leap.

I think it'll likely hemorrhage users until the first big content drop. Hopefully it will get that content drop, but without player numbers its hard to know what Bethesda will do with the game. The best thing this game can do is introducing a large, free, content patch. I think it'd go a long way for the community to get the promised free expansions. As for consoles they have definitely seemed way buggier from things I've read, I would guess it would have to do with hardware since PC's specs are bulkier than most games.

gonna have to disagree there chief; skyrim has much bigger problems than its bland and uninspired art style

Yuhup.

The last few Bethesda games have been ropey as all hell, reliant on tired tropes and cliches with little to no character or nuance. They're gonna need a complete overhaul of their design philosophy, as well as their storytelling mechanics, to interest me.

The Witcher 3 is what, 4 years old now? All the lessons it taught on how to do a next gen western RPG have gone completely ignored, even now. Bethesda need to step up, basically.

I don't think the Elder Scrolls writing and setting has become tired, I think it's been deliberately shifted through both Oblivion and Skyrim to a more generic and cliched fantasy world because that's what has mass-market appeal. The RPG elements have been deliberately diluted to court a larger audience that isn't interested in convoluted, branching questlines, but just wants some high fantasy escapism. I can appreciate that because for all my criticism of Skyrim I have spent hundreds of hours in it treating it as exactly that - as escapism and an immersive sandbox without a challenging narrative. Similarly Fallout evolved between 3 and 4 to more of a straight shooter. 76 is different again because it drops any real pretense of being a serious RPG (although it's certainly not without its own character).

I think looking to Bethesda to make Morrowind 2, or even Oblivion 2, is going to lead to continued disappointment. We're going to get a bigger and shinier Skyrim 2, and it's going to be an incredibly addictive success, but it won't be an expertly written RPG full of intrigue and nuance like you are hoping. I'm hoping for more of what Bethesda have continued to always do well - great environmental design. It's setting is generic but there is no arguing Skyrim has a world full of places to explore. The same appeal exists in Fallout 4 and 76.

But yes my list of things I would want from the next Elder Scrolls game is probably all those things I don't expect to get

This is the thing that gets me down. TW3 is not a perfect game, but it does a strawberry floating gooseberry fool load of stuff really, really well that other games have still failed to learn from. :fp:

And not just in terms of writing, interactions and story-line (although those aspects are some of its strongest areas) but also in terms of content, pacing, world design and locations. I mean just think about some of the locations that CDPR created in TW3, huge sprawling cityscapes like Novigrad, or towns like Oxenfurt - large, well designed spaces that you can move through seamlessly and make you feel you are in a living world. Skyrim gives you a tiny fenced off area with a few huts in and expects you to believe it is the capital city of an entire region!

We had all that in Daggerfall! Then Bethesda continually traded it away for better visuals in an progressively more outdated engine. Skyrim still does it better than Oblivion at least. The Imperial Village :dread:

I am more optimistic here though. Fallout 76 has a huge map (~4x Fallout 4) and has much more realistically sized locations. The problem there of course is that you said "living" world - and 76's is definitely and deliberately dead!

I'd argue that as well as becoming more generic their storytelling has just plain become worse. Fallout 3's cast wasn't exactly a cavalcade of classic characters but at least it has moments of greatness like the Gary vault and The Republic of Dave. Fallout 4, and even Skyrim, had nothing but bland, boring shells for a questgivers, so much so I can't remember a single name from either game.

Of course this may be a result of the conscious changes you mentioned, the steps away from genre to mainstream, but again I'd say that even characters based on generic tropes can be made at least interesting. It serves no purpose to make them intentionally boring and I just don't think Bethesda have a very good writing staff.

Mainstream doesn't have to mean dull, and I don't think it's an excuse for the degrading quality of Bethesda's output.

EDIT: I'm not disagreeing with you here I just don't think the mainstreaming of Beth games is all that's happened to the studio. I think they've made bad games for several years now because, I dunno, over reliance on brand name and formula?

I'm on mobile so this is all rather garbled sorry.

Yeah the TES games weren't always terrible for their city size/design, although the spaces in Daggerfall never really had that hand of design on them and so felt a bit lacking in character and quality to go with their size!

My fear is that Bethesda will stick with the same playbook from Skyrim and not learn from anything that has come out in the last ~5 years. Sad thing is they will probably get away with it and sell millions!
