I managed to kill the boss at the end of the first mission with some difficulty. I tried the next mission and even the standard enemies are way overpowered and have a tendency to gang up on you so I gave up. This seems decent enough but it's just not for me, I found it way too frustrating.

It's much, much worse. Also, NG was more difficult than NG2. I actually completed NG2, but couldn't get past Alma in 1.

It's OK. Certainly need to give it more time to get a better feel for it but I really like the stance mechanic.
Basically you have your light and heavy attacks, but if you press R1 and X, square or triangle you go into a low, middle or high stance. Basically fast, medium, slow. I haven't had time to test if you can combo between them effectively but the idea is there.
I'm also playing it like Souls when it definitely isn't meant to be. The stamina system is brutal. You don't have decreased regen when blocking, you have NO regen. So DROP YOUR GODDAMN SHIELD, y'know what I mean? And running out isn't a case of "take a step back for a second". Here you go into a hard winded animation which will probably get you murdered dead against any enemies that aren't brain-dead jobbers.
My gooseberry fool is getting consistently pushed in.
Tl;Dr, it has stuff. Need more time in the lab.

Pretty awful and the control schemes a mess. Graphics are substandard too, although it is an alpha demo. Not sure anyone will enjoy this tbh.

I've tried giving this a go but I can't seem to find my sword?! 
I go to loot the first body but don't get anything from it. Baffling.
Not sure I've got the time or patience for this game but I'd like to give it a go before the demo expires.

The sword is in your inventory (from the get go I believe) but you must to go into the menu and equip it.

From August 23, 2016, the Beta Demo of Nioh will be available from the PlayStation Store! Players who clear a certain mission of the Beta Demo will be entitled to download The Mark of the Strong and The Mark of the Conqueror, which will grant them special equipment in the final game. Don't miss out!
If you have already downloaded the Mark of the Conqueror, you will be able to start the Beta Demo with your equipment and items. (※Only when starting a NEW GAME.)

New beta remains hard as nails when fighting the red corpses, but is slightly easier on regular mobs, but *totally unfair* at one point
Has a proper tutorial this time around. Really does the trick in terms of teaching you the basics, but doesn't hang around too long. You can give it a miss and still pick up all the info as you play game proper, though.

Oh and strawberry float hype, try the beta. You won't need hype if you like it, y'know?
Tip: don't fight the red corpse summons straight away. Not unless you're finding it too easy.
