Just finished my first play through for Ending A. That was a lot shorter than I expected but I suppose that's because it's not actually the 'end' of the game.

I got caught out by a bunch of side quests becoming lost when I got so far in the story though, some warning would have been nice. Some quests seemed to be in inaccessible locations and I thought I just needed to progress the story more.
Since I understand route b is essentially the same as route a just from a different perspective, am I right in thinking that I could polish up the side quests I missed by doing route B?

Started playthrough 3 :dread: What a lot of shite the beginning of it is, can't be arsed with that.

I know a few of you were looking for a PS4 copy of this and it was pretty hard to find. If anyone is still looking, it's currently available for £24.99 at Amazon (twelve copies left).

Yes, absolutely. Worth that for the music alone.

My one tip: yes, you have to replay the game to get the most out of it, but what's important to remember is that replay 3 and 4 are nothing like 2. And the later ones allow you to get right to heart of it instead of making you slog through same content over and over.

edit: one more tip : do the first few main missions until you unlock fast travel.

jiggles wrote:Wrapped up endings C, D and E yesterday. I haven't played a Yoko Taro game before, so I imagine I could only pick up on the surface detail, but man.

I'd say that one of my biggest fears in life is ending up with dementia. I've had to deal with a lot of stress and overload in the past decade that has taken a noticeable toll on my ability to remember things. I forget names and faces in a way that I never did before, some of my extended family (cousins, aunts, uncles) are just gone at this point. Worse still is that I notice it happening, which has made me consider if not knowing I used to remember things better would be sweet release. If I ended up with severe dementia, would not being able to recognise the people I love be blissful ignorance of the problem, or would it be a fate worse than death? It's a situation I hate to think about.

I haven't read any spoiler-filled assessments of the game's themes yet, so I might be off-base, but NieR: Automata, to me, is a game about this question. It's a game about memory, and specifically, its degradation and loss. From the very opening, it's clear that 2B and 9S place the utmost value in their memories. Their bodies are disposable, and it's the memories that define them. The A ending highlights this further by having 9S transfer his memories to the machine network and become one of them. He's still 9S, but he's no longer a 9S. But this also means that the loss of memories is the loss of the person.

The Wandering Couple sidequest ends with a dark revelation. In a pseudo-suicide pact, they agree to both be wiped clean to forget all their hardships and live in ignorance, but trusting to fate that they will again fall in love and be together. The husband goes first, but the wife refrains, revealing they'd been through this many times before, and that she always clears his memories while retaining her own, because he's easier to manage when he can't remember the bad times.

In the C playthrough, Pascal sees his village destroyed and all the children kill themselves. He asks you to either make him forget or kill him, to rid him of the heartache. While on the surface this seemed like a simple request to make the pain stop, the deeper question is really "is it better to lose all your memories than it is to die?". For me, this was a rough choice. Yes, Pascal is better off without the trauma, but is he better off without his good memories? Is he still even Pascal after that? I don't know, but I wiped him because I selfishly didn't have the heart to let him go. Later, I found him stood among the corpses of his dead friends, blissfully unaware, and selling off the children's cores for a quick buck. He was happy, but he couldn't remember anyone he cared for. I was crushed.

When the endings rolled around, it hammered home the futility of YoRHa's existence. Reliving the same things over and over while getting your memories erased at the end each time. Everything ultimately being meaningless, and that final gut-punch comes where I find myself asking "what is the point in life if you can't remember it?"

And then the game turns into an arcade shooter. A distraction. A toy that explodes with sound and light to entertain. Forget that existential question, here's a game to play to make you have fun. That's why you're here, right? That's what you've been doing these past 30 hours? Look at all these encouraging messages! You can do it! You're enjoying yourself now. Isn't that all that matters?

I deleted my save.

Super blast from the past here but this is a fantastic summation. Seriously, this is brilliant.

Right I got ending C and started again only to learn that I have to use the chapter select and go back to the choice to get other endings.

I've really enjoyed the game but have been pretty underwhelmed with the story, it's interesting but I was expecting more. Anyway, all I'm wondering are there any major revelations? I'm thinking I might leave it at this point if not.

If by 'major revelations' you mean 'the ending of the game' then yeah, you should keep going. Endings A B and C aren't endings.

Ending C/D are the optimum endings after doing all three play through's aren't they?

Endings A-D are...chapter endings at best. If you stop there it's like reading two-thirds of a book and stopping. The ending of the game is E

Going to spoiler this as he's not got D yet

Once you've got C all that is left to do is reload the last chapter, get the D ending, (choosing 9S instead of A2 or vise versa) then all E ending is is completion of the shooting mini game during the credits....it's like 20 minutes additional content at most.

A is the first chapter, B is the second, C and D are the end of the game.

Well yeah. But he wasn't asking for lengths, he was asking if there were any revelations after C.

Which there are.

Ok so do I go back to the choice and choose a different character and I'll see the remaining endings?

I seem to remember the ending of C saying to speak to someone at the resistance camp but there is nothing different there?

Yes I guess so, got the impression you insinuating he was missing huge portions of the game but re reading you aren't so my bad.

You should just be able to replay the last chapter in chapter select and you are done

Picked the wrong choice and accidently stopped the shooting game at the end. Watched ending E on YouTube, to suggest not seeing that is missing out on a third of the story is absurd.

Really liked the game but possibly one of the most overrated I've ever played.
