Looks like i will be swapping my 3ds xl for a new normal sized black model - its the right size and black is much better when it comes to handheld hardware over the long term. Those faceplates are also going to be pretty popular. I can see limited edition ones being 'sold' in the stars catalogue.

Thanks for the game suggestions, will take a look at some of them

In regards to the new 3DS, if I pick one up I think i'll also go for the regular size model as the current XL really cramps my hands

Does anyone else think the 3DS line-up is looking a bit crap this Christmas? I've just seen the sales figures for the system in America last month - 140k - and the overall sales so far this year - 1.1m. Combined with a weak Xmas (two Pokemon games and what else?) I think it's gonna be a slow year all round for the 3DS.

I suppose Smash Bros will continue to sell through Nov and Dec so that's something.

I remember being much more excited by the 3DS this time last year but that had a lot to do with the free game offer that allowed me to get the console, MK7 and SM3DL for £130.

Maybe they should have made sure the New 3DS made it out for Thanksgiving weekend in the US and advertised it alongside the Pokemon games.

We got Pokemon, SMT IV, Phoenix Wright Trilogy and Persona Q. That is okay I guess, but only one of those games is going to do well. To be honest, I'm not that hyped up about Pokemon. I will probably still get it, but I'm not that excited.

I've said it before, Nintendo had such an excellent 2013 with 3DS and Wii U, there was no way they could match that. I'm sure 3DS next year will be great. Bravely Second, Monster Hunter 4, Yokai Watch, Etrian Odyssey 2 remake, STEAM, all hopefully out next year. There will probably be another Pokemon game as well.

I don't mind slow release schedules, because I've got more than enough to play, but it's a shame that we don't at least know of more titles.

A new Metroid game, like Super Metroid, for the 3DS would be great and it would complement Metroid Prime 4 U very well. I'd also like to see Advance Wars make its return on the 3DS with a Wii U game in a similar style to Valkyria Chronicles.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to getting Pokémon and the Phoenix Wright Trilogy.

Talking of 3DS adventures, I don't know whether to choose Bravely Default or Zelda ALBW. I've never played any of the old top-down Zelda games and I'm a big fan of Final Fantasy...

For me, the 3DS does seem to have lost some momentum this year. I'm not into the Smash or Pokemon franchises, so decent new releases seem to be very sparse. It's a shame as the sytem had such a great release schedule in 2013.

I'm hoping that once the 'New' versions of the console launch in the US and UK, new games will also arrive and the buzz will be back.

Does Australia have the same region encoding as Europe? In other words can you play European games on an Australian 3DS and vice versa?

I can't see the 3DS playing host to another Pokemon game after Ruby/Sapphire.

Well, not a new generation anyway - maybe we will get X2 and Y2. They do seem to be wanting to release one each year now.

What next? Logic dictates that either a Diamond/Pearl remake, or a re-remake of Leaf Green/Fire Red (which were GBA games just like Ruby and Sapphire).

And is Youkai Watch getting a UK release?

There are so many great games available now that I'd just buy one and sell it to fund a New 3DS later. I don't know how I lived before Smash 3DS

Has anyone had any experience of sending a 3DS to Nintendo to repair?

Mine is fine, but my girlfriend's 3DS has a couple of times now abruptly switched itself off midgame, despite being fully charged. It's still in warranty and the process itself doesn't seem complicated so sending it to them to have a look at shouldn't be a problem.

My main concern however is that she spends 90% of her time on Animal Crossing which is saved on the system. I'm quite worried that if they for some reason wipe it, even if she downloads it again from the eshop she'll have lost her village and all her hard saved bells. I suppose what I'm getting at is, do you this is a legitimate worry and something likely to happen? If we took out the SD card before sending it, would that safeguard her data?

I've sent mine in for repair but the process for Nintendo Benelux might be different than Nintendo UK.

In any case, I was instructed to take out the SD card, game cartridge and stylus before sending it in. It came back with all the internally saved data intact!

I'm also tempted but I want the New smaller model rather than the XL

Whatever happened to that Rodea sky soldier game from the creator of Sonic? Did that ever get released?

New 3DS XL pack shot for the Australia and New Zealand market:

Image

The box looks strangely long and thin... almost like the console will be packed with the device 'open'? As ever, a power supply is not included. Consoles of the future don't need power.

The operating system software gets a PG rating on account of 'mild violence' :).

The standard box is much better.

The packaging is identical to the Japanese ones (except translated, obv). I'm still pretty amazed that they're sticking with the "new" branding in the west.
