My XL is relatively new, yet the hinge already sounds dodgy, and theres dirt in between the system and the back, where its come away. My 3DS is nearly 3 and half years old, and its great, not a problem.

Wild-prediction-backed-up-by-little-evidence: I reckon a new model of the 3DS will arrive soon.

'Evidence':
- The 3DS model is low in stock everywhere
- The 3DS XL model is low in stock everywhere; with high pricing where available
- The 3DS seems to be losing a bit of momentum - very few big games so far this year

I'm conscious that Smash Bros arrives October and Pokemon in November. I reckon that the new machine could arrive in December, delivering additional processing power and higher screen resolution, but still offering backwards compatibility with existing 3DS games. Digital gaming will be heavily featured; I'd expect the machine to be supplied with a 32 Gb SIM card and that proper customer accounting will be in place. The machine would replace the existing 3DS and 3DS XL models, whilst the 2DS would continue as a cheaper path into Nintendo handheld gaming.

Do you reckon this is possible? When would you expect a new machine to arrive?

Higher screen resolution & additional processing power which I assume would only be for menus and such? You're out of your mind, Jawa.

Its interesting to think the 3DS is as old as it is, when it doesn't seem like its been out for that long. By the same time period in the GBA's lifespan, we'd already seen the DS.

If anything we'll see a new system late next year.

No chance of a "new" version of 3DS this year in my opinion - I don't think it makes much sense. They've already said that they are working on a Unified development platform for software - I don't think that is going to be achievable with current 3DS (or even WiiU) chips.

I'm therefore expecting some form of cross or unified hardware platform coming next from Nintendo - but I don't expect it any time sooner than 2016.

I can see Nintendo revising the 3DS again, just look at what they did with the GBA and DS for a guide.

I don't think the actual specs of the machine will change though, I can see a redesign of the smaller 3DS happening or even a 3DS XXL I guess.

I'd rather we get some actual games before a new 3DS revision. We have enough revisions!

There is literally nothing except Pokemon on the horizon for me..

It is looking surprisingly barren on the 3DS front this year. I'm hoping for some new announcements as the year goes on.

I haven't bought any 3DS games this entire year, that's how bad it is for me. Wasn't interested in Mario Golf, hate JRPGs/Pokemon and I'm getting Smash Bros on the WiiU so there's no point in even getting that. Maybe I'll pick up the recent Kirby game somewhere down the line but that's pretty much it for 2014 unless there's some new surprises in the next 5 months. Compared to the wonderfully diverse and packed 2013 this has been a strawberry floating awful year.

There is Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney this year, but not an awful lot else other than Smash Bros.

We already have that over here. Bought it on release and still haven't played it :shifty:

The only games I can think of are Shin Megami Tensei IV and Fantasy Life. I think Persona Q is due as well.

Oh yes. Forgot about that.

We are proving my earlier statement to be utterly false

So we do, was looking at an old 2014 list and completely forgot it had already come out.

3DS has plenty of games in its back catalogue now I guess that people can catch up on.

Well that's not entirely true is it. Unless you only meant we knew about it rather than could buy it.
3DS is 3 years 5 months old going by JP release.
DS came out 3 years 8 months after the GBA.
Although we had seen the complete redesign with the SP

No I meant we'd seen it at E3. Came out in the US in November 04 If I recall correctly.

Got around to picking up Kirby, great game but could do with a run button. The 3D looks lovely on this game, some clever uses of it.
