WHSmith, Best Buy and Woolworths now taking pre-orders on new handheld
A number of sites have gone live with pre-orders for the Nintendo 3DS, with a placeholder price of £299 having been put in place.
Eurogamer spotted the listings on The Hut, WHSmith, Best Buy and Woolworths. What the site didn't note, though, is that all of these portals are run from The Hut's centralised system, effectively meaning it's a single listing.
Other retailers are yet to go live with a price.
Play.com and Amazon are allowing visitors to register their interest while GAME and others simply have placeholder page in place.
Concrete launch details for the machine will be unveiled next Wednesday at Nintendo's Amsterdam event. MCV has been lead to believe that the console will arrive in the UK on or around March 25th with a shelf price of £200-£230.

Probably go to HMV for it, might get it a few euro cheaper.

Friend codes are back, plus some SSFIV multiplayer details:
Capcom has been hinting at some robust multiplayer play for Super Street Fighter IV 3DS. Famitsu has details this week.

The 3DS launch title will have full internet-based combat, allowing players across the nation to challenge one-another. Capcom promises a lag-free experience for this "Internet Versus" mode.

You'll be able to select from three types of play: "quick match," which pairs you up with an opponent instantly, "custom match," which lets finds an opponent based off conditions that you've set, and "friend match", which lets you select an opponent from your friend list. You add players to your friend list by exchanging friend codes.

UPDATE 4:57 -- Regarding the friend codes and friend list, Famitsu does not make any mention about these being game-specific or universal across the 3DS system. We'll presumably have to wait for clarification from Nintendo.

The game also has local multiplayer play, of course. In the game's "Versus" mode, you'll be able to select player vs player, player vs cpu, cpu vs cpu and download play.

Download play allows you to play versus matches on two 3DS units using just one copy of the game. At Nintendo World last week, Capcom said that the download play support will allow downloaders to transfer the game to other people as well, and will continue to function even if the host player has left. Famitsu does not say if there are any limitations in terms of characters or stages.

Prior to multiplayer bouts, you can set a comment. This is displayed alongside your rank and current battle points (BP) ahead of the fight. Win a match, and you'll earn more battle points.

Similar to the console SFIV games, 3D Edition is compatible with arcade machiuke, or arcade challenge. This allows other players to interrupt you for battles as you play arcade mode. Famitsu confirms that this option will work with both local and internet versus play.

Famitsu also has a look at the game's title screen. This lists the following modes:

Arcade
Versus
3D Versus
Internet Versus
Challenge
Training
Player Data
Figure Collection
Option
One more tiny reveal this week. The magazine has a look at the game's achievement component, referred to as "medals." As you clear certain conditions, you'll earn medals. These can be viewed in the Player Data area off the options screen.

Fingers crossed it is a unified code across all games.

Hmm. I always thought "Universal Friend Codes" was how they'd do it originally, but then they were all like "WE'RE LEARNED FROM OUR MISTAKES! WE WON'T MESS UP THIS TIME PROMISE!" so I started to think even friend codes were gone. The fact you have to "exchange" friend codes already means the system isn't going to be as good as we want, as opposed to the simple "Add > Would you like to accept?" method used in EVERYTHING EVER.

They couldn't possibly be stupid enough to go for per game codes again... could they?

I'd love to see a really frank discussion, Iwata Asks style, with some journalist and Nintendo about friend codes. It seems to go against everything they usually do, and even go against everything they say friend codes is about, and they're this truly bizarre non-system that genuinely makes no sense.

You know what? I think they actually could be :shifty:

Region locking was a stupid decision.

As long as people want to molest children, Nintendo will be there to protect those children.

Nintendo force those children to use seedy online websites to trade codes instead. :shifty:

I'm amazed that Nintendo can't look at places like Facebook and see that casuals want ease of use, not ridiculous "safety measures". Still, I'm not going to get up in arms over this until the conference next week. We know they've got some kind of account system, the friend code might simply be the online method of connecting accounts together. *fingers crossed*

One good thing is that Nintendo appear to have at least lightened up on "Stranger Play" with the article saying you can basically play online versus and get challenged by randoms, and you can even HAVE A COMMENT APPEAR when playing with completely randomers. Wooooo.

'Exchanging Friend Codes' could be a paraphrase for 2 systems coming into contact via streetpass for all we know.

You'd be adding complete randomers in that case, though. Unless afterwards you'd get a chance to see their Mii's, and their recently played games and accept or deny that you actually know/wanted to add them...

I don't kow why they can't just have parental locks on it, then whenever the kid wants to add someone the parent can use the password to aprove it. Then older teens and adults can just turn the locks off and not worry about it.

I enjoy a launch as much as the average gamer but this one, I dunno. NEVER been more excited. 3D gives me a stiffy.

The idea that Nintendo could, potentially, be locking down the online again, while encouraging and letting you share information with complete strangers you pass on the street is so completely bizarre and conflicting that I can't help but think they're trolling us ahead of the conferences.
