The Nintendo 64, often abbreviated as N64, is Nintendo's third home video game console for the international market. Named for its 64-bit processor, it was released on June 23, 1996 in Japan, September 29, 1996 in North America, March 1, 1997 in Europe and Australia, September 1, 1997 in France and December 10, 1997 in Brazil. It is notable for being Nintendo's last home console to use cartridges to store games (with Nintendo switching to a proprietary optical format for the GameCube, then to standard DVD-sized media for Wii), and for being the first modern home console to come with a controller featuring an analog stick.

The N64 was released with two launch games, Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64, plus an extra one in Japan, Saikyō Habu Shōgi. The N64's suggested retail price was US$199 at its launch and it was later marketed with the slogan: "Get N, or get Out!" The N64 sold 32.93 million units worldwide.

Has some of my favourite games ever...Mario 64, the Zelda titles, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64 and of course Goldenye.

Controller seemed great to me at time but I find it a bit akward now

Perfect Dark narrowly shuts Ocarina of Time out of the top spot.

I think it's still the most amount of time I've spent on any one game.

It's not a terribly original choice but I love Super Mario 64, what a timeless classic!

The N64 was a big part of me growing up. I really loved the system, I still have it set up!

I might actually rebut the N64. I'll have to think about it. Shouldn't be too expensive to pick up again.

Usually £25 on ebay depending what games you get

I never owned one when I was younger, but I did play it a lot at a friend's house. I had great fun playing the likes of GoldenEye and Mario Kart.

I did buy one a few years ago, but because I didn't buy many games for it, and not playing it much, I ended up getting rid of it. I did manage to get a few good games, such as Banjo-Kazooie and GoldenEye. I may get one again some day, but I don't know if there are that many games that I'd want to get for it.

It'd need to have good controllers though. I can't stand strawberry floated up N64 controllers...and by strawberry floated up I mean banjaxed. I love the N64 controller itself.

Yeah I had that. It was an RPG about the president being replaced with a clone and stuff like that. Really enjoyed it. Heres the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_Heaven

I remember my controller pack wiped itself and I had to start from the beginning again :x

Beautiful console, which housed two of my favourite games of all time: Super Mario 64 and Zelda OOT.

I only recently completed OOT last christmas on the virtual console rather regrettably as i found the learning curve a little too steep for myself at the time, but seeing the ending finally was a joy. Seeing the ending of Twilight Princess first was also an opportunity to see how similar the two games are, even the endings mirror each others a bit!

My favourite game, however will always be super mario 64, playing it for the first time was an absolute joy, it was genious, i just had to keep playing it over and over again, and must have owned so many incarnations of it ranging from the n64 original, to the us original (to play in 60hz!), to the nintendo ds version, and more recently the virtual console release, but it stands the test of time so much.

It was possibly one of the only games i have owned that had to be completed to the max, even in gta3, a game which is in my top ten best games of all time did not get the max treatment (all hidden packages etc). I had to get every star and get to the top of the castle. I tried for days to get to the top of the castle using that triple jump technique, but to this very day have still not achieved this feat, but will one day!

Stunning, stunning console, one summer holidays me and my neighbours 4 player championships regularly and is probably the defining multiplayer moment in my gaming life, it beats the soulless online alternative anyday. :D

Just one voting option?

I loved them all!

Guess Ocarina gets the vote, then, though each of the above is superb.

Edit: No Lylat Wars?

Goldeneye and Zelda Super Mario is brilliant. Though i must mention Turok 1 & 2 the 2nd Turok game Huge levels took ages to complete some good graphics too.

Turok was certainly impressive for its day, the control scheme was weird though and the fog was just plan unforgiveable, there are certainly better example of fps games, goldeneye and perfect dark being the obvious choices.

Turok 2 was awesome. Goldenye was my fav FPS on the system but Turok 2 did a few things better and is still the best Turok game

True the fog in Turok was a bit of a let down but still made it an enjoyable game IMO. Waverace was another good game hard but rewarding. Perfect Dark was awesom.

Anyone remember Excitebike 64 came out when the N64 was on its last legs was delayed for years for release over here. Very enjoyable game some cool tracks and the track builder was cool and being able to play the original was a nice touch.

For me I preferred GoldenEye single player, Perfect Dark multiplayer. I voted for GoldenEye as it has a place in my heart being the first game I got for the N64 on my 10th birthday, when I got the console, GoldenEye and Rogue Squadron. Image

I only got my N64 towards the end of it's lifespan, but what a fantastic console it was. Paper Mario was a personal favourite of mine. Shame it hasn't been included in the poll...
