DON'T PARTY JUST YET

No no, we have had plenty of threads in Retro Gaming over the years dedicated to Starfox quotes.

Let's talk about Yoshi's Story instead...

I only bought it because it was on a Sky One tv show and I thought the rendered 2D graphics were amazing.

I still occassionally sing the theme tune.

I'll give you Lylat Wars but Yoshi's Story was a tad rubbish. I was giddy with excitement the day I bought thinking N64 Magazine had gotten it wrong in their review. I was right that had got it wrong, they gave it too high a score :(

I found SM64 to be pretty boring. It probably didn't help that I didn't play it until 2005, although the same can be said for Ocarina of Time and it's in my top five games of all time. Banjo-Kazooie however, had such a sense of humour and charm, and was fun to play.

I've been meaning to start a proper speed run of it for about two years. :fp:

Can I just ask a couple of questions?

Ok so who likes Banjo and Majora's Mask more than Mario 64 and Ocarina?

If you do, how old are you?

That's the way, Oxxboy. 8-)

22 here, Suzz. I don't think age is a contributing factor as there's barely a couple of years between all four releases, if that.

I don't know why it matters but I'm 29.

At the time I preferred Banjo to Mario 64. It was just so much more impressive - it did everything Mario 64 did - snowman level, giant fish - and blew them up to epic proportions. Looked damn pretty too. In retrospect though Mario 64 edges it, certainly in mechanical terms with it's controls and camera.

I've always preferred Majora's Mask to Ocarina of Time. I was fairly disappointed with Ocarina at first (too much hype really) whereas Majora's Mask blew away my expectations. Not only was it far bigger and prettier but the thing which really got me was how touching the whole game was. That moment when you help the chicken farmer on it's own obliterates anything in Ocarina's clichéd narrative, and that's just one of many brilliant moments.

You seem to be on a bit of a crusade against Majora's Mask, suzzopher. I'm not sure why but I really don't mind as I can talk about MM 'til the cows come home. It's one of my favourite games of all time, I think it's amazing.

I think perhaps if you were younger when you played OOT (I was 18) then it may have left a bigger impression on you. But it just didn't really blow me away like I hoped it would. I do respect it's design immensely though. I think the Water Temple is perhaps the best designed level ever to appear in a game, it's just a shame that the levels after that got so easy.

The music in Yoshi's Story is fantastic! I have a CD with the soundtrack at home.

My favourite is the "classical" music you hear at Bowser's Castle.

Although the "hip hop" is also great. Ah tick tor tor Koo-pa!

I obviously prefer Majora's Mask, but Banjo-Kazooie was strawberry floating gash.

'64 Magazine' gave BK a better score than Mario 64.

British is best.

It was over-rated as strawberry float, much like most of Rare's N64 output.

Better than Mario 64? Not even remotely funny.

Rare were the best thing about the console.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark aside, most of their game were just average (at best) games hiding behind pretty graphics (see also: Donkey Long Country) full of poorly done collect-a-thon nonsense.

The two Banjo games- gooseberry fool rip-offs of Mario 64 with horrendous, forgettable characters. Anyone who seriously thinks either was better than Mario 64 is a genuine mong.

Diddy Kong Racing - gooseberry fool Mario Kart rip-off with horrendous, forgettable characters.

Donkey Kong 64 - dreadful 3D platformer that played like a gooseberry fool PS1 Mario clone. Watching the intro was infinitely more fun than playing through the game. One of the biggest wastes of money I've ever spend on a game.

Jet Force Gemini - ran like gooseberry fool.

Conker's Bad Fur Day - stunning graphics, but a gooseberry fool platformer. The film parodies and script just save it.

Rare are one of the most over-rated developers of all time. Nintendo punted them just at the right time, and in my ipinion it's one of the smartest moves they have made.
