Well, I'm glad I got my from the Nintendo Store when they had a small restock 2 months ago.

I also recently bought an extra official controller - yes I paid 5x its value on eBay, but these extra controllers were released in such limited numbers, I wanted to grab one before the prices go up even further.

I still think there will be one more small re-stock in the UK for those who haven't got it yet...there must be more en route from China, especially if manufacturing has only just stopped.

As I said in the other thread, I just don’t get the logic behind cancelling the NES mini in favour of a SNES mini. People will want both, why not sell things that people want to buy?

It costs money to manufacture hardware, if they are going to be releasing a SNES mini they don't want to have to pay to make two things that would probably be in direct competition with each other.

It's pretty obvious the NES Mini has huge demand. As would the SNES Mini. Which means they would sell the things that they make. Which makes them money.

Its always better to leave a market not quite satisfied than overproduce a product.

The other thing is that the NES Mini doesn't just have Nintendo games on it, I wonder if any of the contracts for other companies games restricted how many units Nintendo could produce.

Especially a market who will whip themselves into a frenzy over cynically repackaged nostalgia-in-a-box every time without fail.

Do you really think a huge company like Nintendo would struggle to get manufacturers to make these things?
They're hardly at the bleeding edge of manufacturing technology and they make a shitload of profit but Nintendo being Nintendo they get away with stuff like this. They manage to somehow manufacture multiple different handhelds at the same time without it killing them so why would making 2 classic and cheap consoles be beyond them?

They should obviously keep producing & shipping the NES Mini up until Christmas, when they launch the SNES Mini. It's absolute madness that they aren't doing this. I'm not even annoyed at them, I'm just baffled that such an obviously terrible business decision has been made. If I were a shareholder I think I'd have my head in my hands right now.

If we take Sony as an example of a company in the same line of business they kept producing the PS1 and 2 for decades because they knew they could make money doing so. They managed to do so while also manufacturing vastly more powerful hardware because the older hardware was easy to produce.
As you point out Nintendo could make a lot of money with the NES Mini but they decided not to bother it's like they don't want free money.

I had a weird premonition the other day that Sony was going to do a PS1 Mini. Possibly based on the Playstation Facebook account changing its profile pic to the original logo. But thinking about it, the on board memory would have to be so much bigger than the NES/SNES equivalents.

Still... could you even imagine the awesomeness?

That would be pretty cool but I don't see it happening any time soon since you can play just about any PlayStation game on a PS3. I'm not sure memory would even be an issue as a lot of big name PS1 games aren't that big, like below half a gig.

But you can play any NES game on pretty much any Nintendo console, or using any emulator, and that's not stopped the Mini NES.

I think a SNES mini is almost as far as you can go with these sort of things. The early 3D games have aged absolutely terribly. I posted about it in the Crash Bandicoot thread but the difference between 2 which doesn't support Analogue control and 3 which does is striking. The more ambitious stuff would probably be even worse due to camera issues . I loved Soul Reaver back in the day but it'd probably be utter dogshit now.

 In fairness, the original Tekken looked like dogshit even within the life of the console.
