Genuinely not sure if you're doing an irony there.

I'm not, I know Nintendo do the whole false scarcity thing but this is different right? False scarcity is intended to keep something hard to get so as to build demand, resulting in greater sales in the long term (or so the theory goes). But if you straight up stop producing something that is in demand that's not false scarcity, that's just throwing away money. It makes no sense at all.

I doubt we'll get a SNES Mini - Nintendo wants to sell as many Switches as possible and needs to focus consumers mind on the Switch only.

That's crazy. The NES Mini has sold well and I think a SNES Mini would sell even more.

Sure they want to sell Switches, but I doubt the production and sale of Mini consoles would have any impact on Switch sales.

Obviously their data suggests otherwise.

Now they can go "you can buy all these retro games and more...on the switch!"

Alternatively its nintendo being nintendo and not having a clue. Both are equally likely.

The Switch is largely being marketed on its ability to create nostalgia. I'd say it's cannabilising it's own market. I think it's pretty clever. Besides the Switch is in far more demand.

This was back in stock at Nintendo briefly last night for about 10 minutes, had an email from stockinformer.co.uk. So perhaps production hasn't ceased?

Nintendo has announced that the NES Classic Edition is being discontinued in North America.

Nintendo wrote:We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.

I don't even know what to think. Just... why?!?

Get people nostalgic, create demand for Retro Nintendo games and then stop producing it while the demand exists, only to turn around say 'But you can get them all on the Nintendo Switch Virtual Console, coming soon!'. That's the only logic I can see to it.

I think you're spot on, Jamo. I can imagine them thinking "why are we selling thirty games for fifty dollars when we can sell them for $10 each on Switch?".

How many people are going to go from being interested in buying a(n in theory) $60 console with 30 games built in to being interested in buying a $300 console and possibly each game at $5 a pop at some undefined point in the future?

It's like they got worried about people being excited about Nintendo and just decided to piss people off for the hell of it.

I don't know, makes sense to me. Usually the best thing to do when there's a product that lots of people want, but are unable to get, is to take it away completely.

That's another one for the 'baffling decisions Nintendo have made' list.

I imagine (and hope) this will drive more people to consider the Raspberry Pi alternative; that this asshattery and ballooning prices will begin to override the "muh nostslgia/it wouldn't feel right/its not "official" mindset.
