Honestly, if you skipped the Wii U, by the end of the summer the library is going to be absolutely amazing. Spoilt for choice. F you didn’t skip the Wii U and played most the ports, 2018 doesn’t have a huge amount of firsts party stuff but at least there’s third party games and indies coming out all the time.

Well hopefully we will see some more first party (and indeed third party) stuff revealed in the coming months that will please the Wii U "survivors"! :P

Also it's a good point in the indies - now more than ever it is a dis-service to ignore some of the truly great games that are coming through under the radar on the indie scene, hopefully we'll get another Nindies showcase soon to throw a bit more attention on some of the upcoming games in this area.

It's great for both, but I buy my 3rd party stuff on PC, I'll get like 2 games this year :(

I can see your point, Pedz. As a U owner I am a wee bit frustrated by the number of first-party ports... especially as the games are being priced higher than they were on Wii U about three years ago. Even so, combined with third-party hits and indie titles, I feel there is still a great selection of titles to keep most players occupied.

I agree, there's tons for most, I'm just looking at it from my point of view, where there is very little, as the portability aspect of having 3rd party and indies games is totally irrelevant for me and I get them all on PC.

Yeah, in your position I guess it's the big, new first-party titles that you desire. I recall you mentioning that you don't use portable mode. I reckon I'm probably playing 70% portable mode and 30% tv mode... one of my favourite things about the system is this "switch" aspect and I hadn't expected it to be!

As another WiiU owner, I'm also getting a little disappointed by everything being ports. I get it, the WiiU wasn’t a big success and they're trying to make the most of the success of the Switch by porting all these games over and giving non-WiiU owners a big library quickly. I get that the Switch also introduces the portability aspect to these games. Fine. But I can't help but feel like they're kind of going 'screw you' to those of us who did buy the WiiU. What was the point when they're releasing all the games with new content?

I don't play PC games that much, so I do have indie games I can play, but I buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games really, and it's pretty frustrating when they just seem to be rereleasing a bunch of games I already bought on their last console.

I'm in the same boat as you, I buy consoles for exclusives and get anything else on my PC. While I totally understand the ports from a business point of view it's a little disappointing that they're such a big component of the lineup. There's not enough new content in any of them to warrant me buying them again at full-price, I'd consider it for portability if they were at a budget price but that isn't the case (and going by usual Nintendo prices it probably never will be either).

As far as the exclusives go which are new games I'm not particularly excited by Kirby or Yoshi at this point, I have enough scarcely played Kirby/Yoshi games in my backlog as it is. The only one that really grabs me right now is Mario Tennis Aces, I've been waiting since the Gamecube for a good Mario Tennis game and this is looking promising. I always thought the Wii U version played a decent game of tennis but was just so lacking in content that it was barely worthwhile, hopefully this can be more up to the standard of early Mario Tennis games.

I loved Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube but what I was really hoping for was a HD remaster for Switch, or even better a Switch compilation of the first and second games. Getting it on 3DS is pretty disappointing, it won't look as nice as it did on Gamecube, nor will it play as well due to the lack of dual analogue. Not to mention I don't have much desire to play my 3DS anymore. Seems like a wasted opportunity. Wario Ware is similar, it looks like it has most of the best games from the GBA/DS versions plus some new ones, it would have been perfect as a downloadable game on the Switch.

Smash was the most exciting part of the direct but I want to know more about it. It was hardly a bad direct but just fell short of giving me what I actually wanted!

I've just finished watching the Direct and my OrangeRakoon Future Haul List™ is:

Day One
  • Octopath Traveller (July 13th) - I love Smash Bros but this is still my most anticipated game of 2018
  • Super Smash Bros. (2018) - I'm excited! :toot:
  • Mario Tennis Aces (June 22nd, plus pre-launch online tournament) - I love the look of the new techniques like Zone Shot and Zone Speed. They look to add a more tactical level to the game. Even without that, it looks like everything that I've wanted from Mario Tennis since the GameCube game so I'm excited to buy it for both single player and multiplayer fun :toot:
  • WarioWare Gold (July 27th) - I've only ever played a bit of the GameCube game so this will be a good chance to get better acquainted with the series and its quick-fire nature will fit in well with my lack of free time
When I Have More Free Time
  • Kirby Star Allies - I enjoyed the demo and I've been looking forward to this to complement my Xenoblade 2 sessions but I'll wait a few weeks as I've barely had a chance to continue with Xenoblade 2
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (July 13th) (3DS version also coming) - I only completed the first book on the Wii U and kept meaning to go back to it so this will be the perfect complementary game after I finish Kirby. I might end up playing it alongside Octopath
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Junior's Journey (2019) - I've never played this and keep meaning to go back to it so this will be a good chance to do so. I want to make sure that I have enough time for it so I'll wait until I finish Xenoblade 2 and Octopath
  • Detective Pikachu (March 23rd) - The trailer looked interesting so I'm keen to try it out at some point
  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole (April 24th) - I enjoyed playing The Stick of Truth (but I need to go back to finish it) so I'm keen to pick up The Fractured But Whole as well
  • Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (May 18th) - [i]I loved the Wii U version and bought the 3DS one to play the new content but didn't get much time to do so
  • Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion paid DLC single-player (Summer 2018) - I haven't even started the single player campaign
Undecided
  • Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes (2018) - I enjoyed the bits of the first game that I've played but I'm still not sure about this. I'll wait to see more and its reception
  • Dark Souls: Remastered (May 25th, network test coming soon) - This is one of my favourite games of all time but I don't know how happy I'll be playing it at 30FPS, even if it's on the go. I'm keen to replay it so I'll most likely buy the PC version
Probably Not
  • Luigi's Mansion (2018) - I really enjoyed the original but there are other games that I'd rather replay and even more that I've never played that are ahead of those
I'm Not Really Feeling It
  • Dillon's Dead-Heat Breakers (May 25th)
  • Okami HD (Summer 2018)
  • Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido (June 8th) (also on 3DS)
  • Undertale (Coming eventually)
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (July 10th)
  • Little Nightmares Complete Edition (May 18th)
Overall, I really enjoyed the Direct and it showed me a lot of games that I would like to play whether they are new franchises, unannounced titles or even ports.

I, too, am pretty hyped about Tennis Aces. I hope the online play allows us to have some GRcadian matches!

Ports dominating the release schedule probably looks worse due to Nintendo deliberately limiting the time period between a games announcement and it's release. BoTW is obviously the odd one odd in that equation but they are trying to avoid showing off a game too early. It makes their upcoming release schedule look a bit weaker than Sony or Microsoft who are still announcing games two or three years ahead of release.
In 2018, excluding ports, the Switch will get Kirby, that bad fighting game bad people like, Yoshi, Labo and Mario Tennis. It's a solid lineup already and there will probably be another couple of additions to that before the year is over. How many years had the Wii U more than five full priced Nintendo games worth buying? 2014 and that's about it.

I'm still hopeful the Switch Pokémon game will be out towards the end of this year as well which will certainly strengthen the line up.

I am excited to play Luigi's Mansion 1, I must confess. Always wanted to pick up the Gamecube original, but this'll do nicely.

Anyone that hasn't played the original Luigi's Mansion is in for a treat. I got it for the GaneCube at launch and it was brilliant.

So excited for Mario Tennis Aces. I've put hundreds of hours into both the N64 and GameCube versions.

Did you ever play the GBC version, Drummy?
It's got a great single- player mode.

Little Nightmares and South Park Fractured But Whole are ports I'm delighted to have coming to Switch! Will be picking both up, so long as they're available around the £30 mark on physical release.

Already own Captain Toad and Okami, so will be skipping them, but can highly endorse them as excellent.

WarioWare is great news and I'll be getting it, but would have preferred a Switch release. Unless they're saving something else in the franchise for Switch, it seems a really bizarre choice so late in the console's life.

No I didn't.

Also interested in this Toad game but I don't know anything about it.

WarioWare has form for this though, Twisted was released very late for GBA and it ended up being one of the best GBA games ever made. I'm hoping for something similar here.
