And even if its succesful, it is a stupid idea. Print your own toys out of cardboard? Its essentially making an airfix model out of cardboard, and we all know how well those worked for us as kids.

Blahblah skyrim, blahblah GTA, blahblah Gears of War, blahblah Killzone, blahblah Forza, blahblah F2P arena shooter

It's impressively different at the very least, and as professional maker also working with microcontrollers like Pi and Arduino etc (part of my business actually runs off one) I'm really glad to see this expand gaming elements into educational and craft/making/art areas. It's like Mario Paint but with an inextricably tactile and functional activity rolled into it, with interactive Lego-like instructions, that finish with actual, probably quite fun, games.

It's certainly not the stupidest idea in gaming ever, it's adding value in many ways to the field. If it's not for you, cool, I don't care, and while expensive, I don't think it's as overpriced as some people think. Lego, for example, is ultimately "just plastic", but very well engineered plastic. This is well engineered cardboard. And they won't be responsible for literal landfills worth of plastic, single-use-case peripherals/shell thingies produced by the industry so, as sustainable design, it's marvellous.

Anyway that's presenting an argument to a cardboard box so I won't run it into the ground. I just read this

You can even draw and cut out your own sine graph, slot it into the piano and when you hold down a key, the sensor will ‘read’ the shape and the pitch will undulate accordingly.

How can that not be ingenious? As a sonic artist in past and present, that blows my mind in terms of creativity.

You could probably flatten the entire thing and put it away. I really hate adding up peripheral junk. It's extremely daring to tackle this issue.

Cardboard is underrated, that's all I'm saying. Hey look it's just a painting made of a piece of paper and some oil. I think this attitude speaks more of the discarded nature of 100% of packaging as well as hard, quickly redundant plastic goods if anything. Let's not kid ourselves, you buy these peripheral things and scurry them away for decades. If that is the timeline, they damn well should be made out of cardboard!

If Nintendo release designs for this stuff I will make my own out of wood anyway.

(and by the way, wood splinters and cracks, cardboard does not)

Nope, nope, that’s far too reasoned. Better to grunt and just say it’s bollocks. ;)

(If you cannot see hoe genius an idea this is, then you have no soul.)

Now I’ve seen the video and read the previews, I think it’s a fantastic idea, looks like loads of fun for kids and adults, and I hope it’s a big success.

If Switch had no other games, of course I’d be concerned, but with some of the best games ever made coming out last year, who can complain if Nintendo want to experiment a bit.

My only complaint is the price, but it looks like you get quite a few models for £60 and I presume you can build them all at the same time!

I’m no kid, but I’m almost certain to buy the packs :)

I just didn't hear adults saying, "WHAT ABOUT ME?" when Tellitubies was big and saying it was a stupid idea despite its success. That is just weird.

It's a weird thing I don't really get in gaming, I guess because it's a young industry there are more traditionalists? Which is itself ironic because there is so much innovation in the field, even on the really brown games.

I'm biased because I literally have no desire whatsoever to play any of the FPS, action adventure, sport, TPS, RPG games etc. on any of the current systems at the moment. I don't even know what the library for XBO and PS4 or Switch is, save for a few games. But that might make my perspective more balanced to this discussion, I have no idea.

I just love making stuff so this is for me but 20 years ago. I had Lego Mindstorms then, but you couldn't play games with it, not with motion controls and this level of software quality. That's a new thing.

Words and stuff, I like the idea.

I'm already an expert in preserving cardboard so if anyone wants to print money in 100 years go nuts.

Preordered both packs.

My kids will love it. But I’ll be the one to set it up and colour them in. My kids will bring the worse out of me in those areas.

Nintendo really missed a trick here. They could have easily sold this for much less and become a big hit with younger children. I could imagine a parent picking it up for their kid for some rainy day entertainment if a box cost like £40 but at £70 they are going to be limited to birthday and Christmas presents. Also, it's in the price category of stuff I would never buy for a kid that was not my own so they've lost sales there as well.

I really don't understand the logic of the pricing since they just have a fairly basic game there and the cost of the construction materials is very low.

Nice try. This is all Ive played lately.

I hate GTA. I don't play arena shooters. Killzone was always bad. Gears of War had one good game. But this Nintendo fanboy defense drives me mad, criticize Nintendo and its the usual response of "OH YOU MUST LOVE COD GO PLAY COD WHILE IM HERE IN MY IMAGINATION SPACESHIP OF MULTICOLOUR DREAMS". Seriously, enjoy your cardboard printing, have fun, it doesn't stop it bein being a strawberry floating joke of an idea. Instead of making actual games for switch Nintendo gives you a cardboard docking station and its "Genius".

Okay so this is obviously just trolling now. Did Miyamoto hurt you or something?!

This is clearly and objectively not a "joke of an idea", you don't personally like the look of it? Fine move along it's obviously not for you.

See my earlier comment, the price of these materials is not as low as some seem to believe. Breaking down what you get in the box it's actually quite well priced, sure they could probably have sold it at a loss or for a smaller margin, but the suggestion that this is a rip off is wide of the mark IMO.

I'm telling you with manufacturing understanding here die cutting card to that quality is expensive. The repeatability of maintaining bespoke machining that is not really convertible for another process and maintaining reliable card supply, consistent quality, weight (as in GSM) for the clearances, tabs inserts etc. to hold consistently, glues, printing etc., using responsible forestry - do people question how much a contemporary tabletop board game costs for example (warhammer etc.) that gooseberry fool is crazy expensive, like £70. You get a few miniatures (usually plastic or resin), here you get some software that you could call the "toy to life component". It's not like you have to cut the thing out yourself. strawberry float I paid £100 for a wad of some decent flat double walled cardboard back in the day for a gigantic papercrafting project (I built a 15 foot walk-in geodesic dome with cardboard and glue). The material is actually quite expensive - anyone buying packaging for a mailorder business will know this - but complex geometry, shapes etc. even more so to produce.

Anyway, OK sure Brer you play some PC games recently, I haven't heard of half of them, cool. But the general resentment towards more original stuff that is not targeting our demographic whatsoever tends to come from the angle that "Nintendo don't make proper games for gamers anymore" (which you have half and half not implied) while competing devs/publishers peddle out the same stuff over and over again (the same criticism levied at Nintendo, with at least each iteration being different). It isn't even true that Nintendo don't make challenging or "proper" games anymore whatever the strawberry float that means.. But I never respond well to "it's gooseberry fool, stupid idea" based on no objectivity, no matter what it is or who makes it. It just mocks progress being made in games being more accessible and diverse and played in different ways, or some totally different appraisal of a product like music.

Nintendo have made universally praised games for the Switch in its first year, the inference at best they are focusing on this sort of thing and neglecting "AAA" games (blah) is just willingly ignoring the quality of their recent output.

Already acknowledged your opinion, just don't care for that because it stands on nothing else but "lol it's gooseberry fool". Nice shitposting.

btw it's painfully hypocritical to call out any "defence" (in such a boring ass binary sense) of a Nintendo or any other dev's product as "fanboyism" when its presented along with reasoned arguments, experience and opinions.. instead of just the latter, flagrantly flippant remarks.

Pre-ordered the Variety Kit and Customisation Set from Amazon. Expecting a shortage in stock with Nintendo, more so when Ad7 buys 50 of each.

As if people are saying Nintendo don't make anything for hardcore gamers after they did BOTH Mario and Zelda last year

Sounds fantastic. I'd love to try them all but I'm not paying that kind off money for it.

Yeah, I've no intention of buying this stuff myself. I'll leave it for the market it's aimed at kids/families. Just think it's a genius concept!

Showed the kids the video, explained what it was all about. Can't honestly say they were all that interested.

Eldest will be 12 this year so I guess that figures and she much prefers her painting, drawing and drama. Her 8 year old sister simply didn't seem all that bothered by Labo. That may change over the course of the year if Labo takes off and her friends end up getting it, but for now I'm going to have to think of something else for birthdays/Christmas.
