Wow, talk about a major surprise for E3

Not really, pretty sure they mentioned something about this when they started doing Nintendo Direct.

The Nintendo fanboy inside me hopes not.

I believe they already announced that they were working on their next systems being built on similar architecture so that they could use their resources more effectively.

I certainly think that unless the Wii U turns things around next style that their next system could very next be a handheld that can be used at home in the same nature as Wii U but will be fully portable.

It makes sense. Having a conference only invites comparison to the others. With Microsoft and Sony selling THE FUTURE at theirs, anything they have for console would be a massive "who cares?" to the non-enthusiast press.

The writing has been on the wall since the start of Nintendo Directs. They're a much better way of getting information out to the consumer, and there will still be smaller press events and hands-on stuff during E3.

A big press conference is just a massive waste of money.

I'm happy with the way they're doing it now, with the Nintendo Directs. Nintendo's past few E3's have been pretty terrible anyway, with a lot of time spent on sales figures which most of us don't care for.

Don't worry, they wouldn't have been showing sales figures this E3 anyway.

Shame they're not doing it this year, I enjoy a one-off bit of Razzmatazz and weirdness over the more professional Nintendo Directs.

Just like Apple, they used to wait for Macworld for their big announcement now they have less grander mini conferences to announced their products, could be the case for the other platforms.

Only to existing customers. People without a 3DS or Wii U (outside of games forums) likely have no strawberry floating clue what a Nintendo Direct is.

I think this is a good decision. Nintendo directs have been an excellent way for them to communicate directly (if you excuse the pun) with their fan base. It also feels more personal in my opinion. The big E3 presentations just aren't very effective these days with so many big announcements coming all at once. I don't think the industry or consumers can really digest all that information.

This is probably the right time for E3 to start getting a bit smaller, I think their original attempt at that was just premature.

Yeah... I think I would miss playing that Nintendo magic on a telly.

Here's a list of bullet points with the important details:

  • Nintendo are not doing a large-scale event for E3, rather, they are doing smaller-scale events for gamers, the press, investors and distributors, respectively.
  • While making their Nintendo Direct videos and putting them up, Nintendo paid close attention to what people were watching, and figured out that, obviously, some people want different information than others. Basically, they finally figured out that gamers don't give two gooseberry fools about the statistics they pull out every year, which are aimed at investors and analysts instead.
  • As a result, they're hosting smaller-scale events at E3 for different audiences, so us gamers can watch the stuff that we want to see rather than having to trudge through the crap that we get bored with every year, while investors, analysts and the press get the stuff they want as well separately Everyone wins.
  • Nintendo don't have any hardware to launch, so they're focusing entirely on software.

TL;DR: The only thing that's really changing is that Nintendo are splitting up the big conference into more focused events, so gamers can cut out the crap and focus on the stuff they want to see. More content for gamers, less boring filler.

Something of a shame on one hand, but on the other I really dig the Nintendo Directs. There's a certain overblown quality to E3 that can get kinda obnoxious, I like how direct (ha!) and to the point these smaller scale videos are.

Plus...let's be honest, Nintendo's track record for E3 conferences isn't the best :P
