So as if going after all the ROM sites wasn't enough for them, they've taken down an 11 year old construction kit used to make fan games.

I believe Nintendo's support for indie games is as "in good faith" as any large corporation doing anything (so not terribly, but that's capitalism!). Yet they evidently haven't made the obvious link between today's fan-game makers and tomorrow's indie game developer, and I think that's sad, and short-sighted, and probably damaging to their own industry & business long-term.

Let your talented teenaged fans make Pokemon games now and they'll build your next big franchise in 15 years. Play the long game.

Well to be fair they need to shutdown all of these illicit games, you can see clearly that its cannibalising sales of their franchies and their hardware sales suffer because of it. They need to do something before its too late.

This reminds me of when F1 Management goes around blocking fan videos on youtube, even those which were filmed by spectators in the grandstands.

Why can't fans put their energies into something truly great? Like a good modern Harry Potter game.
All within their rights to, I suppose, but if ever these people go to make proper games in the future, I'm sure they'll remember that Nintendo effectively told them to stop and take their business elsewhere.

Problem is that some people who mod, hack, remake and/or create their own from the ground up think they can do better, thus potentially pulling dick moves in the eyes of Nintendo.

I'm sure most aren't like that but some modders and such can easily come across as arrogant, self entitled cretins.

Well if we look at Sonic fangames, it's not so much the creators themselves as the people who support them. I'm pretty sure it's the same for others as well. Many a person upon playing a fangame say upon initial reaction "this is the best thing ever and beats out any official game in years" which in turn gets attention.
Now if you were a company making games, would you want that remark being made popular? Would you want the clear meaning of 'fans have made better games than us' being widespread? Even if that remark isn't true?

That tends to be the way unfortunately and it's even more unfortunate when that statement rings true; to think that with so many more resources, more money, more everything at their disposal, companies such as SEGA for example - the roots of Sonic - can sometimes seem less responsible, less in touch with their own creation than the fans it spawned is wild.

I would hazard a guess as to say this is precisely why so many fan projects get shut down.

I find it hard to feel much sympathy for this. Nintendo are completely in their right to do so and if you're going to try and piggyback off of someone else's property you really should see it coming. The amount of fangames that get announced and shut down mean it's an insane task to vet each one and while 99.9% are probably totally above-board and in-line with Nintendo's ideals, they can't guarantee that 0.1% where Link is going around stabbing babies for crack money isn't there.

It's easy to paint Nintendo as the big bad corporation keeping the little guy down, but they're right.
