It's at the point where the announcement of the direct will be bigger than anything they announce on the direct.

There's a lot of random stuff going on Twitter but it seems the common theme is fire.

They're either trolling on hinting at something. I don't think they'd be doing this for Fire Emblem so maybe Smash announcement incoming? The logo is on fire...

Other Twitter accounts that have responded to NoA's chibi-robo "fire" tweet with their own fire tweets include:
Megaman
Sonic
Assassins Creed
Obsidian
riotgames
Resident Evil
Star Citizen

It could be bored social media managers of course but it does seem a little co-ordinated...Smash with new characters from those franchises? The internet would explode...

ResetEra members are literally crazed about when the Direct will be shown* and Chibi Robo (on fire) is the mascot for their zeal. Nintendo recognised this and indulged in some light trolling by posting 'Robo :) .

* Although, looking this morning, their Direct hype thread seems to have been removed?

Ah, cool, cheers.

I've been out of the Nintendo loop for a few years... why might a Direct be such a big deal? Sorry, firing basic questions all over the place at the moment.

Because they have very little revealed with only Yoshi, Kirby and Fire Emblem confirmed for this year.

People have got themselves worked up over what they might reveal-Retro's new game, Metroid/Pokemon footage/date, Animal Crossing, Smash, Mario Maker, Pikmin, Donkey Kong etc etc.

Of course, 2017 is loaded so they might be relying on 3rd parties and ports to carry 2018 but there are signs there could be a decent amount to reveal:

> they've internally restructured and are focusing on one machine as opposed to two, and have dropped hints

> they've dropped hints about new IPs and untraditional older IPs being in the works

> they've said they want to maintain the consistent release schedule 2017 had

> next fiscal year they're forecasting to sell over 20m Switch units which is huge and arguably too big to be carried by 2017 momentum alone without some big releases

Cheers mate. I had glanced at the schedules and thought it looked a bit sparse, but it'll take me most of the year to get through the games I've got, plus Zelda, so on a personal level I'm not too worried. Metroid and Pikmin would obviously be lovely, though.

As an aside, this really shows how good an idea the Directs are, people are frothing at the mouth for Nintendo to announce when they will press play on a video that will announce some stuff. No matter how often people get hyped up for these and get disappointed they still look forward to the next one and desperately want any info they can possibly get about them. These regular drops of announcements are great and I dont know why the model hasnt been pinched by other companies.

Newcomers to Nintendo have gotta understand that:

> You must get mega-hyped (frothing levels) for at least three days prior to every Direct
> You have to create unrealistic wish-lists beforehand; and include things like F-Zero Ultra, Super Mario Galaxy Double Pack, Half-Life 4 and any kind of Virtual Console
> Post Direct, try and be just as happy with Mario Party: Shake It!, Animal Crossing Mobile v2 and FIFA 17 Remix
> Start talking about when the next Direct may be

Nintendo  .

I agree and to take it further I think they should use the 2017 approach every year. Now, obviously last year was structured the way it was because of the timing of the Switch itself' reveal but I think as a format it works very well.

Announce your lineup for the year in January, go full blown on the big titles at E3 with individual Directs before release when necessary, and don't really focus on anything that's out the next year.

Obviously this only works when you have a full and consistent release schedule though.
