Is there anything even remotely credible suggesting Smash is coming out this year (Or even in the works)? I only ask because even Eurogamer, who love a good bit of rumourmongering, haven't mentioned it as far as I can remember.

I'd also highly doubt we'll see Mario Maker in 2017. 2018 at the earliest and they'll need to figure out how they'll make the level design work when it's docked. Plus I'm expecting a bit more from that than just another port. I'm talking technical additions like slopes, placeable water and lava pits, Mario Bros 2 and Mario Land level sets, perhaps a world builder. Not to mention the obligatory addition of new blocks, enemies and amiibo support. There are design issues they need to figure out to get some of that stuff working, but it's something they should be able to make quite quickly. It also will have the advantage of already having millions of pre-made levels, ready to go. I'm looking forward to bringing back AYAMM to a (Hopefully) bigger audience as well. Can't wait.

A few rumours mentioned Smash was getting the enhanced port treatment like MK8. It makes sense as I don't Sakurai really wants to get straight to work on a brand new entry plus the Wii U game would work as a great base, they just need to add a couple extra characters/stages and maybe even a single player campaign mode thing

With Mario Maker, the pointer control could ofer a decent alternative creating levels whilst the system is docked. Again they could just take the Wii U game and add in all the extra features/better online and it would save them a ton of work than starting from scratch.

The reason I think they would look at trying to get these games out asap is that they need compelling reasons to warrant paying into the online service. If that launches at the end of the year and the only real online games are Splatoon 2 and MK8: Deluxe they could struggle selling it

Smash Bros just seems too obvious not to happen, it would be an easy thing to port over with all DLC and a little new content (Much the same as with MK8:DX) and it's guaranteed to sell like hot cakes, it'd also nicely fill another gap in the release schedule. The fact that Nintendo seemingly postponed the release of the last three Smash Bros Amiibo's adds a little bit more fuel to the fire that would suggest they'll be released along with a port. Sakurai also suggested it would be the last one he was involved in and it sounds like Iwata played a big part in getting him to develop them previously so I suspect we won't see another Smash game with Sakurai at the helm.

Plus the Bayonetta and Cloud amiibos that were announced ages ago still aren't out. Would seem silly to release them for a game on a dead console with little fanfare.

I'm not doubting that they'll port it over, I'm just doubtful it'll be this year. I'd have expected to hear something about it by now and I can't think of any reason why they'd keep it to themselves. 2018 seems a more likely bet to me at this point.

I'm not sure how well Mario Maker would translate to using pointer controls. I could see it being quite fiddly to use that way. Though that said I can't think of any other way they might do it (beyond just standard controls).

I think that it would be possible to use the pointer or analog stick in docked mode but the best way to design courses would be in tablet mode. Maybe it will be part of the next New Super Mario Bros game and the whole thing will be announced at E3 2018. Mario's platforming 2017 will belong to Odyssey.

Most likely. Just a shame as it'll feel a bit like a step back from the stylus and Dual Screens of the U in that regard. I'm not too concerned though, handheld mode will be the best way to do it.

I'd expect to hear about the 2018 line-up in some form at E3. We know quite well what's coming this year now so they need to start laying groundwork for 2018. Especially if they're going for a big push at Christmas. They need to show people who are currently holding off that if they jump in at Christmas there will be titles coming regularly.

More interestingly, I'm hoping that we'll start to hear more from some of the developers they named during the reveal about what they've got coming.

I don't see it as much of a step back as, for me, the Switch would really only be missing the stylus. When I designed courses, I only used the GamePad screen so the lack of two screens won't be much of an issue for me. Of course, if the displays had been asymmetric, this would be a different story.

Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon and Odyssey will be more than enough for me this year so I don't mind hearing about 2018 projects at E3. Stuff like Puyo-Puyo Tetris, Fast RMX, Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 mean that my GTX 1070 will be quite lonely this year.

The Secret of Mana game simply has to get an English release.

The first 2 are already translated as they came out - hopefully Square are getting their translator onto the third one.

Loved Secret of Mana on the SNES. :)

Shame it's just a rom dump. It's quite expensive for what it is.

The boxart is beautiful though.

Assuming it gets an English language version I may pick it up. Been meaning to give the Mana games a good go for years.
