Exactly how I felt all the way through, hence how it climbed over Resi 4 to become my favourite game.

Big claim! Not a bad claim, but a big one.

It is chuffing marvellous though.

I was really hoping for a Dan megapost but I'll take it.

I wasn't aware anyone considered that there was such a thing!

Got a dog today so I'm a bit otherwise engaged but will post more soon.

To be fair, anyone who knows you have a Switch and doesn't recommend you pick up SMO is a damn fool.

Checked my Profile recently and I've only got 5 hours in SMO. Played it when I got the Switch last Christmas and never went back. Should probably get on that.

What I'd give to play Odyssey for the first time again.

I think I did 10, Taf, so I've gotta return to this, too. What I did play was an absolute delight!

It’s a shame they never added DLC worlds to SMO, would have killed for new worlds themed on different Nintendo IP’s

Maybe they are going to do what they did for Super Mario Galaxy and release a Direct sequel to Odyssey in a year or so?

It was really fun, but in a "play 10 minutes, go do something else way."

I think, I can't really remember!

Dark Souls finally arrives on Switch this week! Differing rumours are going around... some folk are saying that the audio is still compressed (albeit that seems to be based on older footage) whilst, in the new video above, gameplay seems to be solid.

Are you gonna be visiting Blighttown on your Switch?

It's wonderful isn't it? I'm only a little further along than you, I've gotten to the Metro Kingdom but not yet done anything of note there.

What are your impressions so far?

There was a thread some time back where we had to name our all time top twenty, and I recall saying something along the lines of "I'd like to think that Odyssey and BOTW will be on this list once I've played them". I've not yet touched Zelda, but that's only because SMO has proven me so correct thus far.

Intoxicating is the word that springs to mind. It's been said a few times recently and it's true: each play really does induce a reactive grin. Such a metaphor would make Nintendo the intoxicant and it's an image I can see clearly: that of their developers cooking up the latest batch of their addictive, manic smile inducing substance, we addicts thinking the last drug was the best drug ever but then you get a hit of the new stuff.

I was surprised when SMO got the reception it did, mainly because Galaxy seemed such an unlikely piece of wizardry; the perfection of the formula, and finally a worthy sequel to SM64 in the eyes of even the most cynical critics. To do it again seemed improbable. Mario 64 seemed impeccable, but when games like Banjo came along it made the feeling of success in SM64 seem somehow abrupt - collect the star and you're hoiked out of the world via the painting, forced to start again. Galaxy made amends by replacing the large, reused worlds with many more, smaller levels, each one seemingly bespoke to the challenge it posed you, while multiple paths within that challenge were treated as secrets and rewarded as such.

Some talked about Odyssey being a sort of successor to Sunshine, which is fair in that we're returning to larger worlds and the purple 'coins' aren't dissimilar to blue coins. But otherwise Odyssey is its own beast; there are no abrupt endings to exploration any more. And so that doesn't dilute the feeling of wonder, Nintendo have upped the ante; for my own enjoyment I've deliberately avoided spoilers so I've no clue how many total moons are in the game, but I'm aware it's a lot. An endless succession of rewards, much like Crackdown 1 and its orbs, each bringing that involuntary smile to your face.

And then the nods, winks and outright hellos to games of the past - it's a thing of brilliance, it really is. The 8-bit cat Marios hiding in the walls to offer rewards. The side- scrolling sections with 8 bit Mario wearing whatever daft costume you've put him in. The way every level is a kingdom again. They've mixed it all with the fantastic, new stuff that you never thought could really work (Mario in New York? Sounds silly. Works brilliantly). It's a triumph.

That shameful feeling Taf must have at knowing Jawa has more playtime on a game than he does.
