Is it worth picking up a switch just to play zelda? Not owned a nintendo console during the days of the snes. But BOTW looks pretty epic

What they said.

Personally I wasn't keen on Aces... but I know that Jazzem has really enjoyed it!

It's in the "Excellent" category, Balla' :-).

2X MISCOMMUNICATION COMBO! I meant to say that I enjoyed Sushi Striker much more than I have thus far MTA, and that DKTF should have only been in ‘Good’. It is a solid 2D platformer, better than the previously discuss NSMBU, but not much more than that. (The soundtrack, of course, should be in the ‘Absolutely Outstanding Best Of All Time Look On My Works Ye Mighty’ category.)

I have little interest in ports of U titles. I want to see a new 'new super Mario bros' title and something like Super Mario 3D World 2 (my preferred next Mario title). I thought think Mario maker shows that Nintendo are being lazy when it comes to making a new Mario 2D platformer. If Jack a 9 year old from Basingstoke can make an enjoyable level on Mario maker then Nintendo need to pull their fingers out of their arses and get on it.

After three Mario Maker competitions, I feel that people are really underestimating how much work goes into creating even a single enjoyable level in a Super Mario game.

Yeah but they would employ 50 Japanese geniuses. Should only take them 1 week tops.

jawafour wrote:I guess that I may have an "outlying" opinion about BotW and Splatoon 2; to me, I think of them as Wii U ports even though I recognise them as excellent titles. I wonder if it's the ports, third party and indie titles that have made the Switch so attractive, rather than the exclusive first party games?

Splatoon 2 just plain isn't a port and as others have said Breath of the Wild is a special case.

But yeah, I'm pretty sure its a combination of factors. Having Breath of the Wild at launch along with a strong first party lineup for the first 8 months or so (up to Super Mario Odyssey) can certainly not be underestimated. However, I think there are significant factors beyond this and having the likes of Minecraft and Rocket League available along with a huge lineup of really very good indie games available help to explain why it continues to sell well now.

So its a combination of quality new first party titles, remasters and high profile indie games that I think makes it such an attractive purchase.

The issue now is can Nintendo keep it up. The indie games don't seem to be a problem, but I think Nintendo need 3rd Parties to step up to bolster Nintendo's first party lineup, there's just no way Nintendo could ever keep up with what they delivered in that first calendar year.

The other thing with 2018 is we know of at least two new titles, Yoshi and Fire Emblem that have been delayed to 2019. And that’s just two games we know about-it’s possible there have been delays on games they haven’t revealed. We don’t know what the likes of Retro or Next Level Games have been working on for example.

Been using my Switch for a couple of weeks, so just a few added thoughts:

- Mario Tennis is good fun. The tennis action is solid, but the game is lacking in content. The adventure mode was particularly frustrating, as it basically repeats the same four challenges until the end. Local co-op is basic but great fun, and I had some brilliant matches online too. Definitely worth a weekend rental, preferably before the online subscription kicks in as I can see the number of active players plummeting.

- The eShop layout is not good, and makes it hard to find anything well.

- I don't really find the Switch that comfortable in handheld mode. Not really a big fan of the joy-cons, so am using the console docked with the pro controller wherever possible. Might look for some grips to make the joy-cons more comfortable. The speed of changing between docked and handheld mode is impressive though.

- Odyssey is brilliant, and everything I'd hoped for. If you have finished it, check out the SGDQ speedrun (but ignore the annoying commentary).

Good to hear that you're venturing into the world of Switch, Osito! Yeah, I didn't take to Aces (it's the only Switch game that I've traded in so far) but some folk are really enjoying it (I believe Jazzem has put around 40 hours in). I prefer to keep the joy-con connected to the console and use the Pro when in docked mode. It's great that you've gotten fun out of the excellent Odyssey!

Tomous wrote:...We don’t know what the likes of Retro or Next Level Games have been working on for example.

Retro's project really is a mystery. I guess they must have been working on something(s) since 2014 when Tropical Freeze launched... and, as I believe they're a developer of reasonable size, probably before that. My thinking is that either they were some way down the track on a Wii U project and they've been expanding the scope of that for Switch; or they ditched a project and started on something afresh. It's incredible that we haven't heard an inkling from them for four years. Maybe part of their team did the Trop Freeze port to Switch?

I had to Google Next Level to remind myself what they'd done before (Luigi Mansion 2 and Metroid Fed Force). I'd imagine that they could be involved in making the upcoming Luigi's Mansion game for 3DS?

Meanwhile, I've started my Saturday in a somewhat rebellious fashion. I've changed my Switch theme from white to black. Never wanted to before, but now it just feels right. I'm kinda hoping it's not gonna be too much longer before I can apply an Animal Crossing theme, though.

That was the first thing I did when I got my Switch. The white theme burns my eyes now.

It has taken me a while to get around to that kind of thinking... but I'm there now, Spinny 8-) .
