...and Zelda sold more copies on Switch than the number of Switch units sold

Nintendo Switch Becomes the Fastest-Selling Video Game System in Nintendo History
More Than 906,000 U.S. Units Sold in March; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Game Also Sets Records

Nintendo Switch, the new home gaming system that people can also take on the go, has sold faster in its launch month than any other video game system in Nintendo history. The Nintendo Switch system sold more than 906,000 units in March, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. That makes Nintendo Switch one of the fastest-selling video game systems of all time. Notably, this sales surge was accomplished in a nontraditional month for a console launch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game sold over 1.3 million units*. That total includes more than 925,000 units sold for Nintendo Switch and nearly 460,000 units sold for the Wii U console. That means that Nintendo sold more of this game for Nintendo Switch than it sold Nintendo Switch systems, for an attach rate of more than 100 percent. This may be attributed to people who purchased both a limited edition of the game to collect and a second version to play.

This was all enough to make The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild the fastest-selling Nintendo launch game of all time, as well as the fastest-selling game ever in The Legend of Zelda series.

“Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone.”

While Nintendo Switch sales are off to a record-breaking start, shipments have not yet been able to keep up with such high demand. Nintendo is working to make sure everyone who wants a system is able to buy one, and more systems are continually being shipped. In just over two weeks, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game will launch for Nintendo Switch on April 28 with more content than any other Mario Kart game in series history, including 48 racing tracks, new Battle modes, new characters and other additions. Competition on Nintendo Switch gets even hotter heading into summer, with the release of the ARMS game on June 16 and the Splatoon 2 game on July 21.

Weirdly, it's the first Nintendo system in a long time that I just don't care about yet. I guess I need more than Zelda and Mario to get the juices flowing these days.

Wii numbers are only so low because they completely failed to meet demand though right?

Despite some baffling Nintendo-isms, it's an exciting console & Zelda is an excellent game. I'm glad to see them doing so well.

Once again puts all those Why won't they go third-party :x  posts in perspective.

That is an insane number considering how the console doesn't even feel complete at this stage.

Just imagine how many more Zelda sales they'd have if people didn't have to pay 350 bucks to buy a console to play it on that's going to be a paperweight once they're done with it.

Great numbers for Nintendo, especially considering this isn't typical console buying season.

Keep hearing how hard it has been to find a console in North America, so hopefully there will be less shortages in the coming months especially with the likes of MK8 and Splatoon on the horizon.

Given that more copies of Zelda sold than consoles, I'd guess there are 16,000 Wii U owners trying to figure out how to play the Switch version or people bought them up expecting a shortage they could make some profit from.

Yes?

Glad it's doing well. The gaming landscape without Nintendo would be very saddening.

I hope to get one of these by the summer, but I'm not sure. Got a lot of boring stuff to pay for.

This is my main concern.

I've had and loved every Nintendo handheld and fully intend to get the Switch at some point - I really want one now but can't justify it while Zelda is the only game I'm interested in.

Would maybe check out that Yooka-Laylee but seriously, where are all the games? And not like, Tetris vs Puyo tennis 5 or whatever the strawberry float, games that are actually big amongst the general public.

It's pretty clear at this point that it's a 3DS style soft launch, with the library slowly ramping up 'til Christmas, which is when the discounts and bundles and marketing blitz will happen.

It's a hell of a soft launch in terms of numbers though. I wonder if Mario Kart will keep that momentum going.

This is the problem I have with it too, feels like people are buying games that you wouldn't touch on another platform purely because choice is so limited.

Only game I can see being a game people wouldn't typically buy would be 1-2-Switch other games people are seemingly buying on other platforms.

I was surprised about the excitement around the new full price Bomberman game, thought I'd missed something about it

Yeah, i wanted that, but not at full price. It is more like the older games where it has a single player and stuff, unlike the XBLA game which was just multiplayer.

Yeah... the wait between launch and Mario Kart is a little too long.

The Switch suffers without 3rd party support. However, it looks like Nintendo are prepping for a sort of monthly cycle for major releases (Mario Kart = April - Ultra Street Fighter = May - ARMS = June - Splatoon = July). With Mario Odyssey presumably in November, I wonder if they'll be able to fill the gaps in August, September and October.

Research firm SuperData revealed today that its analysis shows that Nintendo has sold 2.4 million Switches during its first month of release. The home console/portable hybrid launched worldwide on March 3. SuperData noted that it collaborated with market researcher Gfk and the Japanese gaming publication Famitsu to come up with the figure.

SuperData now projects that the Switch will sell 7.2 million consoles in 2017. That is up from its original forecast of 5 million units, showing that this is a better start than the research group was expecting.
