The line-up was surprisingly good... sure, many of the third party titles were ports, but it really was pretty solid.

It's likely that you couldn't have a March launch and Mario Odyssey as a launch game.

Second, especially in the case of Mario Kart 8, it's probably been put as an April release to fill the schedule out rather than have a launch and then nothing until July.

I don't think it makes much sense to put probably the two biggest titles out on exactly the same day. I don't think Nintendo have ever done such a thing with Mario and Zelda before? They tend to space out their releases

If you're looking at things on launch they could have fixed or changed, there's better things to look at, like the price, the advertising, not having the virtual console up and running, the Joy con issue or releasing more stock to retailers, rather than getting its two biggest games out on the same day.

When you look at the PS4 launch line up, for example, the difference isn't the first party big hitter (Zelda is arguably "bigger" than anything on the list, albeit a Wii U port), the difference is the amount of third party stuff. Again, quite a few were ports or iterations of PS3 games, but there was a few of your yearly Activision or Ubisoft franchises in there. For whatever reason, they aren't on the Switch.

The console could have some with one or two of them to beef it up, rather than moving Mario forward when there's already Zelda, or moving the console (and maybe Zelda too) back 8 months.

Though the Wii U launched with quite a lot of third party stuff and that didn't do much good.

The Switch seems to have sold its allotted units quite well (it's sold out everywhere here) but you half think that it probably didn't ship in great numbers or Nintendo are doing it to create demand.

In theory the Switch should be getting more first party games from Nintendo and third party exclusives (from Japanese devs since Western devs don't really give a gooseberry fool about handhelds because the lack of horsepower) since games won't be split between a separate home console and handheld now.

Depends on how long they are going to keep supporting the 3DS. It's got quite a big user base by now, so is obviously a good source of income, and I wouldn't say it's a dead console.

But at the same time, for people to buy into the Switch, they can't really be seen not pulling their weight and splitting their resources like with the Wii U.

The 3DS has a fantastic library, so if that transfers across to the Switch, along with the traditional home console content that even the Wii U had, then we'd be in for a treat.

I don't think they'll give up on the 3DS yet though, as it's too risky putting all your eggs in the Switch basket.

I have a sneaky feeling that Nintendo aren't going to simply stick all their games on the Switch, which is fine by me, as I still plan on using my 3DS, but it's going to piss off more than a few Switch owners if they do.

I don't even know what upcoming games Nintendo has coming out for the 3DS. I know Square-Enix have Dragon Quest XI but god knows when that'll make it over here, IX came out in Europe more than a year after Japan and X was never released in the west. If the 3DS version comes out in 2018 the 3DS will be dead at that point. It's getting a Switch release as well but they haven't shown any of that version off at all.

Pretty sure there's some Fire Emblem stuff announced a month or so ago for 3DS later on this year.

For a console that's essentially a handheld with a HDMI out, that price point is insanity. Especially now you can buy 2nd hand PS4s in gamestop for 100 euro less than a switch. If the console hadn't launched with Zelda, id say it'd be closer to Wii U sales figures.

The handheld nature of this console is going to make it a much bigger success than you think I reckon.

Once the 3DS is phased out, there will be absolutely no opposition except for mobile gaming.

I've criticised this launch for a number of reasons, but I have nothing but respect for the business decision to merge their handheld and home console markets. Its very clever.

Not really.

Would have been more higher if they had more games at launch and not only a Wii u game as the big title.

If I remember right I think the win u was a sell out at 40,000 as that was all that was shipped to retailers so I would still remain a bit cautious as to whether it will do better than the wii u. I do expect it to sell better overall as it should attract some 3ds only owners as well.

I guess they must be reasonably happy with that but it does set up the potentially tricky questions if it keeps doing better than the Wii U but worse than the 3DS about which route is better to take.

Also the Wii only sold 105,000 units at launch? That seems low considering what a juggernaut that turned into!

You couldn't buy one anywhere for months afterwards unless you went on eBay. As fast as Nintendo could ship them, they were out of stock. I remember nonsense posts about people believing Nintendo were holding back stock to pump up people's desire to obtain one.

It wasn't like the £425 PS3. A price so high that it was available on day one without a pre order.

I think it's a safe bet to say the Switch is going to have a slow first 9 months then pick up around Christmas. By that time it'll have a great library building up, there'll be better bundles, and they'll do a marketing push as well no doubt.

Then a new Pokemon game will come out some time in 2018 and it'll really explode. Because Pokemon.

Pretty much this, the first few months will be spent sorting out the kinks and adding in/improving features. By Christmas the Switch will have a line up headed by

Super Mario odyssey
LoZ: BotW
Splatoon 2
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Super Smash Bros switch Deluxe

Those 5 plus the combo of some other first party games like Arms and the great selection Nindies should give Switch a great first Christmas

If Mario Odyssey is anywhere near as good as Zelda, then you probably have 2 of the best games of all times in the first 9 months.

I'd call that more than pretty solid

I just wish Nintendo had launched with a AAA non-Mario racing game like Wave Race or F-Zero...

So it's outsold the Wii U already?

If the rumours are true Pokemon Stars, then there's Pikmin 4 which has been known about for years and I think it's a fairly safe bet there will be a new Animal Crossing game by the end of 2018. That's pretty solid, then it'll be about time for a new Smash. Hopefully somewhere in there we also get the real system-seller: Captain Toad 2

It's only the price that stopped me buying one.

I wonder if Retro's game will be saved for 2018 at this point? Could be an early 2018 game seeing we have Mario this Christmas.

I'm hoping the Pokemon Stars rumour was false and they are hard at work making a brand new title built from the ground up on Switch rather than re-use the existing Sun & Moon stuff.
