Who knows with Nintendo but I imagine the one pillar approach has allowed a lot of cost savings and efficiencies internally. I dont think it makes sense to go backwards but you never know with Nintendo.

Yeah it feels like it has freed them up to explore more "one off" things as well like Labo, Mario Kart Live, the Mario 35 game and watch etc.

Fair point - as in, everyone who had a Wii U would have bought a 3DS to get them through the droughts.
Suppose it might be relevant for Nintendo's accountants, but probably nobody else!

Another thing with comparing to the last generation, I imagine the profit margin on a Switch game is much better than a 3DS game.
It is going to be more profitable for them selling games on a Switch than a combination of Wii U/3DS.
And I mean, something like Pokemon probably didn't cost much more to make on Switch than 3DS

The Kyoto-based company approached multiple parts suppliers about accelerating production. People with direct knowledge of the matter verified plans to expand output.
Nintendo is taking an unusual step for a device that is already in its fifth year of existence. The strategy will have to contend with a number of new rival offerings that have appeared in the last year.
In addition, Nintendo will release a follow-up Switch model capable of better graphics. This will be the first such offering since the 2019 release of the Nintendo Switch Lite.
In the previous fiscal year through March 31, stay-at-home demand brought about by the pandemic fueled blockbuster sales of the social game "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" and the new "Monster Hunter" title.
Nintendo appears to have broken a new consolidated profit record in fiscal 2020. Such an earnings report would echo the results from fiscal 2007, when the company released its two hit devices the Wii and the DS
This console is doing fantastically well for Nintendo, surely it will hit PS4/DS numbers by the end of its life once a price drop and the new model comes. Financials are due out this week so be interesting to hear what they say.

So would the 30 million units include the updated Switch or not? I’m guessing they’d want at least 5 million of the improved Switch available this year if it is happening, either way the Switch is going to have done great numbers once they release the Switch 2 (although I still think if the rumoured upgraded Switch is as much of an upgrade as some people think, it’ll deserve the Switch 2 name anyway).

Think they'll have a bumper Christmas thanks to Wonder but does look like hardware is slowing.
Except it'll land somewhere in the 140ms and fall short of the 155m ish the PS2 and DS hit.

I don't think 150m is out of the question but yeah feels like they're not going to see another big boost in HW sales now unless they really do have something special in their back pocket.
Of course, "lifetime" sales go beyond just when the system is the primary seller for them - they will likely continue to shift some Switch's for a while once any successor is released (especially if there's some kind of compatibility overlap period...) which gives them more of a chance to try and beat the PS2/DS

New console bundles have been announced for the US (one with console + Super Smash Bros Ultimate download code and one with console + Mario Kart 8 Deluxe download code) so I expect we'll see these available in UK/Europe, too. Not majorly exciting packages for existing owners but maybe a wider spectrum of folk could be tempted.

They'll have a decent Christmas but past that I don't think it'll sell a load more, none of what we know is out after Christmas is a console seller, sure you might get the odd person who will want TTYD, but if thats all they want, they're more likely to wait to see if the next console is backwards compatible first before shelling out.

Nintendo Switch has just over-taken the Xbox 360 to become the third best-selling console of all time* in the US. It now sits just behind the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2.
