According to Japan's Nikkei, which is a stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Nintendo will cease production of the Wii U during 2016.

The story is being reported by videogame news sites including attackofthefanboy. Apparently, some peripherals have already ceased production. Nintendo has not yet confirmed when its new videogame system, codenamed NX, will be launched.

Nikkei have never been the most reliable of sources for things like this in the past. I'll wait for the official statement.

Can't remember a console ceasing production before marketing had even started before.

It was bound to happen, poor sales plus the coming of NX hammered the final nails in the Wii U coffin

To eBay, everyone!

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Can't say this is surprising news (if true). There must be a gigantic amount of unsold units out there.

Well, if true, that all but confirms that the NX is a new home console and probably launching worldwide later this year.

Zelda to be the U's swan song?

I hope the gamepad lives on in the NX, refined and sleek as fook.

Will look to pick one up for cheap later on in the year!

Zelda won't end up coming out on Wii U.
Make it a system-seller for NX, or chuck it out for a dying console?
I don't own a business, but I know what I'd do.

Piss off potentially every potential owner of your new product?

I wonder if the NX will have backwards compatibility of any sorts...

I think if they were bothered by this, they wouldn't (allegedly) cease production of a console that customers thought would be supported during an average console lifetime (8 years? Open to argument). You've already pissed them off. "Remember that Wii-U you bought? The one we'd support with loads of Nintendo franchises and 3rd-party support? Yeah, we're not doing that any more, because frankly, it's not bringing in the Bucks, and we're a business".
What would the attach-rate (and subsequent profit), honestly, for existing owners, compared to launching a new system with a nostalgia-filled killer ip?
If you own a Wii-U, I agree, you'd be pissed off. But shareholders won't give a strawberry float about that.

I'm done with buying Nintendo home consoles now at this stage, the support is just not there.

Agreed. NX is gonna have to be something really special - or very cheap - to pique my interest.

But then it's a fair bet I'm not exactly in the target demographic anymore.

I don't own a business, but I know what I'd do.

I doubt it'll be an either/or scenario. As with Zelda Twilight, there'll probably be a dual release - good for business, as some folk will no doubt buy it twice.

It's just like the original Xbox, where the console got dropped as soon as the successor was in sight. Admittedly, it's a bit weird to see Nintendo's newgen entry getting discontinued before the PS3 and the 360 (or the Vita).

Nintendo fans would still lap it up.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I don't think there is in the UK; few stockists and numbers appear pretty light. In Japan there have been stories of stock shortages in past months, with cases as recent as last week.

I wonder how much inventory Nintendo is sitting on? I doubt it's that much as their policy during recent years has to been to only manufacture enough (games, peripherals and consoles - although the consoles have hung around longer!) for immediate sale rather than to hold large stock.

I guess we'll find out in the coming months!

5 years is about average for a console lifespan. It looks like the Wii U will splutter towards 4, so whilst not good is not as awful as you make it out to be.
