And they're not talking porn, either.

C&VG wrote:Nintendo has kicked off an eight-week marketing campaign to heavily promote the online capabilities of Wii.

The new 'Get it Online' campaign has kicked off with a huge banner on Nintendo's website site which takes you through to a series of movies that show you how to get the Wii connected to the internet, play multiplayer games and browse the Wii Shop.

The page also invites users to submit their mobile numbers to receive text links to mobile versions of the videos.

Nintendo hopes this will give Wii online gaming a boost in the battle against the well-established PSN and Xbox Live, the latter of which is projected to generate £680m in subscription fees by 2013.

Multiplayer titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pro Evo and (CVG all-time favourite) Mario Kart Wii are some of the main titles highlighted by the new campaign.

It seems like Nintendo wants to take online gaming a little more seriously than you might think.

The Wii is Wi-fi enabled out of the box, which ironically puts them in a better position than Microsoft - the real proponent of online gaming. Too much irony! *dies*.

(Does the Wii have an ethernet port?)

No but you can buy an official equipment from Nintendo to enable ethernet connection. :fp:

It's disgraceful the 360 isn't wifi ready out of the box.

It doesn't come with one, but you can get a USB LAN Adapter which adds in an ethernet port. It's just plug and play and works like one was built in, although I've never personally tried it.

Except that because it's a USB device, there's presumably no way it can approach proper ethernet speeds.

Sooo to get my Wii online, Nintendo offer me a web support page? :fp:

They have no chance of rivaling the PSN of XBL, unless they allow you to build an account/friends across all games.

Having said that, I was impressed with Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. They're still basic mind.

But if it was, they wouldn't be able to charge £40 for a piece of equipment it probably only costs a couple of quid (if that!) to manufacture. ;)

I used one of those for a bit. Why the hell you have to buy such a thing in the first place is slightly bizarre, but you can get one pretty cheap and it works fine.

But yeah.
Nintendo: Comparatively weak web infrastructure, wi-fi out of the box but no ethernet port.
Microsoft: Great online component which they use as a USP, ethernet cable but you need a ridiculously priced peripheral for wi-fi.
Sony: Decent online component, ethernet port AND wi-fi out of the box but awkward software for actually getting the thing connected. Plus a bollock load of lengthy updates which seem to appear EVERY SINGLE TIME you turn the poxy thing on.

I don't think we've hit the online revolution just yet, chaps.

To keep the Wii nice and small. You could have Wi-Fi or Ethernet, but the Wii wasn't big enough for both.

It only needs to be as fast as your internet connection and the Wii uses USB 2.0, so it's more than fast enough.

Is that right? I'll be the first to admit I don't fully understand the mechanics of it, but if you can use a simple USB converter to connect it via ethernet, would a small port on the back not do the job too? I'd say there's room back there for another connection. Of course, I could be completely wrong about that and the converter works in a completely different way to a direct port.

That and paying £60 to make it so.
The next one had better have built in wi-fi.

Well as long as a few people don't have to pay £60 :fp:

I don't particulary want to pay £20 extra or whatever on my console. I guess you can't please everyone, and someone is going to have to foot the bill for someone else somewhere.

I can't stand wifi. It's just too unreliable for my gaming need. Ethernet cabling all the way!!

Wifi is plenty reliable so long as you have a decent router.

Fortunately my 360 is close enough to where my laptop sits to be connected to it by ethernet and share it's wifi connection. It's a bit annoying that the laptop has to be booted up in order to use xbox live though. I wish I had a wifi adaptor for it but it's not worth the price.

I'd only go online regularly with the Wii if Nintendo sorted out Smash Bros. There's absolutely no excuse for the sh*t, bog standard nature of anonymous fights. Why can't there a match-making facility? Why can't I know who I'm fighting? Why isn't there a table of some form? "Oh, but the stats would make it almost impossible to do a ranking system.", say Nintendo. Really? Lazy tw*ts.

Yes it is. And it's something that a PS3-owning mate of mine enjoys bringing up in conversation every time.

There's no need to be here any longer than necessary. Let's split up, look for survivors, and get out of here.
