> Welcome!
This is the Nintendo Wii U community chat thread for GRcade. It's a place for discussing news and sharing views on all aspects of the Wii U.

"Club U" is GRcade's unofficial club for fans of the Wii U. The club is not anti-other gaming formats nor negative towards them; we just enjoy the U!

> Online gaming
Game with Club U online! T9Flake maintains a record of Nintendo Network Identity Codes (NNIDs) for GRcadians. If you're a Wii U owner, why not join in? Click here to view and update the log.

> Help and guidance
Useful information on some of the most common questions raised by new owners of a Wii U console.
Nintendo Network Identity Code (NNID)
Your NNID is your user identity when you use the console. If you own a Nintendo 3DS console then you can use the same one for your Wii U.

What is a NNID?: Link.
Guidance on creating a new NNID: Link.
Guidance on using your existing 3DS NNID with your Wii U: Link.

Connecting the Wii U to your wi-fi
The console will usually be able to connect to your wireless hub as per any other computing device. If you experience difficulty then you may need to manually change the settings. Kotaku noted some setting information that may help you - Link. If you'd prefer to use a wired ethernet connection then Nintendo supplies a branded adapter ("Wii LAN Adapter") that can be purchased - Link.

Gamepad wireless connection
The Gamepad connects wirelessly with the Wii U console. Whether you can move around your room or home without the signal being affected will depend upon the type of walls that you have in your room. If the building is modern with thin (plasterboard) walls then the signal will go right through; but if the walls are traditional (brick or stone) then the connection will be impacted.

Storage
The Wii U console is supplied with either 8Gb or 32Gb of on-board storage; it refers to the space available for storing games and files on your console. As digital downloading is becoming increasingly popular, you may find that you want to have more storage space. The Wii U has USB connection ports which allow an external storage device to be plugged in.

Nintendo recommend that an externally-powered hard drive is used. Some owners have successfully used USB flash drives and hard drives that take their power from the console, but these are not recommended by Nintendo.

In general, most externally-powered (i.e. with its own power supply) USB (v2 or v3) hard drives can be used. The ports themselves are v2 but compatible with v3. The console supports drives up to 2Tb in size; a larger drive could be used but only 2Tb of space will be available to the console. Nintendo maintains a list of compatible drives that they have successfully tested with the console - Link.

Transferring your Wii console content to your Wii U console
Games that you have stored on your Wii console can be transferred to your Wii U. If you transfer a Virtual Console game that is available (or later made available) in an enhanced Wii U format then you will be entitled to upgrade the game at a reduced cost to the eShop pricing.

Games that are transferred to your Wii U console are accessible via the "Wii mode" icon on the console's main menu.

Guidance on the Wii to Wii U transfer process - Link.

Controller compatibility
Wii Remotes, Wii Remote Pluses, Nunchucks, Wii Classic controllers and Wii wheels are compatible with the Wii U console. The controllers need to be paired (connected) with the console before they can be used.

Nintendo information on playing styles: Link.

Nintendo Network Premium
Nintendo Network Premium is a scheme administered by Nintendo for the owners of 'premium' Wii U consoles. A 'premium' console is classed as one that has 32Gb on-board storage and comes supplied with the Gamepad cradle, Gamepad rest and console stand.

Points are awarded for all purchases made from the Nintendo Wii U eSHop and these points can be collected to claim vouchers to spend in the eShop. Nintendo runs a website for these owners - Link - and you can sign in using your NNID and password. Points are totted up automatically (updated daily) as you make purchases from the eShop. Points can be collected until 31 December 2014.

The vouchers can be spent in the Wii U or the 3DS versions of the eShop.

Club Nintendo
When you make a Nintendo purchase then you can usually claim Club Nintendo points. Complete the setup process (link below) to ensure that your eShop purchases are automatically awarded points. If you purchase a physical product that is supplied with a Nintendo registration card, you can manually log the code at the Club Nintendo website. The points can be collected and gifts can be claimed from the Stars Catalogue as detailed on the Club Nintendo website.

How to link your NNID to your Club Nintendo account: Link.

Linking up with Friends
Playing online is a major feature of modern gaming and you can do this with your Wii U console. You can also communicate with your friends in fun and innovative ways - refer to the Miiverse section below.

Guidance on linking up with friends: Link.

The Miiverse
The Miiverse is the central communication hub of your Wii U console. It allows you to message, draw and communicate with your Wii U friends and other Wii U owners. The Miiverse also features specific areas ("communities") in which you can view and share information about specific games. You are able to write messages, post screenshots and, more recently for the Mario Kart 8 game, post video. Try looking around the Miiverse - it's amazing!

The Miiverse can be viewed via PC or tablet device but it is at its most effective when accessed via your Wii U console. The Miiverse can also be used through a Nintendo 3DS console, but it is slightly slower and not quite as fully-featured.

Cool, Garth. Try and pick up Mario Kart 8 so that you can join in with the online racing action; it'll give you lots of fun spiced up with a fair few sweary bits!

T9Flake wrote:I just pm'd you the link for the NNIDs if you want to put it in the OP...

Ooh, good idea - thanks, T9 - I'll add it now.

Steamworld Dig is out in the eShop today. Has anyone given it a go yet? I'm wavering even though quite a few GRcadians have lavished praise upon the game on other formats.

Steam world Dig is pretty good. Tempted to double dip as I loved the 3DS game. It is quite short and it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Why exactly have we lost all the history and useful posts this topic has provided?

Could anyone recommend a good portable hard drive and usb-y cable please? Most of my U games are digital now, so I probably should get one.

Is there any sign of another Smash Bros. related sale?

Doesn't seem to be doing NeoGAF any harm.

Generally don't bother with 'The Website' unless something stupid happens.

It's a reasonable question: Why have we had to start a new U thread, what's happened to all the content of the previous one? Some of us have limited time to post and read on here, I did notice something mentioned about a 250 page limit which I noticed is something to do with new forum rules etc. Is that the reason why or something else? (If it is, then can we still access the old posts in searches etc?)

Gents, the changes aren't specific to the Club U thread; there are a number of wider changes taking place in GRcade. Just for info, and in case other folk visit this new Club U thread without reading of the changes, a quick summary:

> GRcade is undergoing some changes and enhancements with the goal of making the community an even better place. From a Club U thread perspective, as a large ("mega") thread it was felt that this could be unwelcoming to newer members. The site team agreed that no thread should extend over 250 pages and that 'general' threads (such as our Club U thread) should be labelled as 'Chat' threads to clearly indicate their general nature

> Notification about these changes has recently been posted - (click here to view) - and this followed a discussion period where GRcadians were invited to share their thoughts - (click here to view). These two threads built upon many older threads in The Website section of GRcade

> If a GRcadian has concerns or improvement ideas about the changes, please may I invite you to route your thoughts through the main website threads (as above) rather than noting them in this new Club U thread. This will ensure that your thoughts gain the right focus

We are fortunate to have a wealth of terrific people in GRcade who contribute interesting, funny and challenging views on videogaming. In the old Club U thread we had a tradition of supporting that approach and I'm confident we'll continue to do so and help the push to drive forward GRcade.

Just to confirm from a Wii U perspective, GRcade has not lost any of the excellent information nor the history of commentary from the old Club U thread; it has been archived and it can be viewed by clicking this link. I will add this link to the opening post of this thread. Thank you.

Dude, get it bought, it's an absolutely tremendous game and very reminiscent of Nintendo games of old.

Out of interest, how many on here have completed DK Tropical Freeze? I recently went back to it and after many attempts I have just got passed that puffer fish boss. Boy is it getting tough now!
