I got my Wii U in Christmas 2012, which I think was a month or so after launch. I'd started like properly playing video games the year before so the Wii U ended up being the first console I played on extensively throughout its lifespan. I don't honestly have a huge amount of games for it but I did play every one I owned which I can't say for any other console really.

In terms of sales and third party support it was a strawberry floating disaster despite some early promise, and this was in part due to terrible advertising and it being underpowered compared to its competition. I do remember fondly the one full year before the Xbox One and PS4 launched where it was the most powerful console on the market tho haha. In retrospect it did a lot of things better than switch; backwards compatibility, virtual console (though neutered compared to wii) main menu, free online, voice chat capibility, better controller (I will die on this hill), Miiverse, and nintendo arguably put more effort into the games it released on the thing (until like 2016).

So happy 9th Wii U, you were flawed but also misunderstood

It'll probably be the best exclusive by default by the end of the Switch's life....

Some great memories there, VlaSoul! Yeah, your words make me feel that the best way to approach the U is to look at what it can do rather than what it can't. I love the sheer Nintendo-ness of it; things like having the red velvet curtain option when using the web browser on the TV... revealing the scene to other viewers with a swoosh!

And, yes, that feature could potentially be terribly mis-used  .

Oh yeah it had a web browser
That's another point to the Wii U over the Switch

Most of the games I was interested in have been ported to Switch (a fact Victor often sings the praises of), except for a bunch of games I really want to play which didn't review particularly well or are unlikely to be ported for other reasons and the Wii U meets my console buying criteria of there being at least 5 games I really want to play - Paper Mario, Woolly* Yoshi, Starfox Zero, both the Sonic games.

Loving it so far and enjoying most of the games and honestly for an impulse purchase I wasn't sure about I have less buyers remorse with it than the PS5. Theres loads of games on the eshop (the eshop thats much better laid out, user friendly, previous Nintendo console represented than the Switch eshop) - does anyone know if the Nintendo eshop vouchers still work on it or how I can add funds?

* The correct spelling of 'Woolly' will never look right to me

Wow! Welcome to Club U, Barnsy!

There's lots of stuff well worth checking out on the U and, yes, that includes Sonic Boom :toot: . It's fair to say that most of the Deluxe versions on Switch run and look a little better than on the U, but I'd always suggest that Pikmin 3 be played on the U; the combo of Gamepad plus Remote and Nunchuk work a treat.

Here's Nintendo UK's guidance on how to link the NNID on your Wii U to your Nintendo Account: click. I have my 3DS, U and Switch linked so that when I top up credit on my Switch, the other two can access the funds as well.

Thanks - that worked out quite well - I own all the other Switch ports I want except Pikmin 3 which I was going to eventually pick up on Switch - but I'll get it on Wii U now.

I was going to wait for Wind Waker to be ported to Switch but I think I might get it on the Wii U - as I understand it uses the dual screen and you can cycle through the menu? Also I eventually want to do another playthrough of BotW and wondered if it was worth double dipping - does the Wii U with the handheld screen have any advantages over the Switch version?

Cheers I have most of those on Switch and I think I have most the games I want for now but will let you know.

Loving the Wii U so far - control pad is big but perfectly comfortable.

I like all the other games but Sonic Rise of Lyric really isn't great is it. Only myself to blame not like I wasn't warned. I like Sonic Galaxy Boom a lot though.

Starfox Zero, shame innit. I like it and the controls aren't unplayable - but they've taken one of my favourite franchises, it looks beautiful and there definitely a good game in there somewhere and almost made an active decision to make it way worse than it could be with its self imposed restraints. Kind of similar deal with Paper Mario and I liked the battle system in Orgami King

Still loving my Wii U - great console. Very quirky, very charming and very Nintendo.

Nintendo legacy content is so well represented on the eshop - you could play nearly all of the Metroid and Zelda titles! Plus theres loads of platformers on it.

Charge on the controller doesn't seem great but I think I have a non-official charging cable. Its an approx. 2m cable that plugs into the USB of a 3-pin plug - unplugged I get about 20minutes out of it but perhaps its supposed to always be plugged into the mains and I'm getting a trickle-charge?

Is that the GamePad or the Pro Controller, Barnsy? Either way it should be lasting longer than that; the GamePad gives around six hours (depending on what battery is being used) and the Pro Controller gives a legendarily lengthy fifty or so hours!

The gamepad (as in the big one with the screen). Got the console used and its what came with it. Not a big deal really but I might look into getting a better charger.

Official charge cables are hard to come by now but there are plenty of alternatives; this one is under a tenner and has sold over 260 through a UK seller on eBay so would seem to be pretty reliable.

It has been a while, but...

Wii U Digital Shop Bargains!

Fast Racing Neo £2.19
Nano Assault Neo £1.79
Art of Balance £1.43

Why not check out these Shi'nen classics before the shop closes down?

I finished Sonic Lost World and Sonic Boom.

I actually really enjoyed Sonic Boom, I knew the criticism would be over-the top - but it was exactly what I thought it would be - flawed but fun platforming with an interesting take on combat. The graphics were nice and any glitches or bugs wasn't game breaking for me.

Sonic Lost Worlds is legit a low-key masterpiece, I personally preferred it to Colo[u]rs and it's one of the best post-16bit era Sonic games. It's sad this game got lost in Sonic's history being on an under-appreciated console, it would be nice if it got a Switch port or even it was allowed to seek it's fate on Game Pass or PS Now so more people could enjoy it.

I'm excited for Sonic Frontiers now :D

Join my Sonic Boom Fan Club, Barnsy! Yeah, it was a bit clunky but I found the game to be fun to play through. Very much an enjoyable [6] for me.

Staying back at my parents' for one night and because my consoles are all elsewhere, I've loaded up the Wii U.

It remains a criminally underused console, partially due to me (I bought it on a whim in March 2013 and then just ended up playing 360 stuff) and also due to events in my life (moving to Japan in August 2014, and the console not being region free meant it got left behind).

Looking at my Play Log, I've out about 20 hours into 4 or 5 games and that's it. The only title I've played that was released after summer 2014 was Star Fox Zero.

Really feels like an asterix in my Nintendo collection. In some ways, it's the consoles fault - it feels like a relic already, even though it's not really *that* old. It felt like a relic every since the Switch came out, but even during visits back home for a Christmas 2015 and 2016, it felt weird to be playing it.

I'm tempted to go take it with me to my apartment when I return tomorrow, but with the Switch, the PS5 and the Xbox, I think it'll just gather dust in a box again. Not sure what isn't actually available on Switch now, either.

Saying that, my purpose of making this post was actually because I've been playing Star Fox Zero. I'm a sucker for the game anyway due to Lylat Wars, but I can't see why it didn't get better reviews. It's a great little arcade shooter and true to the series. I know some hated the controls, but I don't mind them and the second screen mostly works. It's one of those rare games where it wouldn't really feel the same without the gamepad.

Breath of the Wild is the same on the WiiU as the Switch.
Such a gem of a machine.
