The GamePad is great for games like Zelda where you can manage your inventory and see the map without pausing the game. I'll miss that on the Switch. Thankfully we'll still have a form of off-screen play which was very useful.

I had so much fun with this console. My second favourite Nintendo home console.
I'll be getting Zelda on Wii U to round off my library for it. Actually there's a few other games I would like to get, Pokken, Mirage Session and if it gets a release here, Half Genie Hero.
I love the Gamecube, was the first home Nintendo console I got at launch, was at the perfect point in my life when I was old enough to appreciate games properly and have some money to buy them, yet still have a significant amount of free time. It has some of my favourite first party Nintendo games (Luigi's Mansion, Wind Waker, Smash Bros Melee, Pikmin 1/2, Chibi Robo) and some of the strongest third party content on a Nintendo system (Rogue Leader, Billy Hatcher, Viewtiful Joe, Super Monkey Ball). That combined with the Game Boy player, the form factor of the whole system, that perfect controller. It is fairly comfortably my favourite ever console.
The Wii U definitely evoked some feelings of that though, had some wonderful first party games (sadly not as strong as on the Gamecube for third party titles though!), I loved the Gamepad and felt the second screen, when used well, was brilliant. It also had some of the quirkiness which was reminiscent of the Gamecube. Most importantly it really brought back local multiplayer in a big way, as someone who grew up playing local multiplayer on N64 and Gamecube it was a big deal for me that I could get a group of friends round and have great local multiplayer fun in my late 20's. Nintendoland in particular is up there with the best local multiplayer games I've played and I still see me playing that when I have groups of people round in 5 years time and later.
The Wii never clicked with me in quite the same way, I had a lot of fun with it but while there were games I enjoyed, there weren't as many games I loved. The likes of Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing all felt like downgrades from the Gamecube version whilst even the games I really did enjoy, like Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword both carried huge frustrations at times with the use of motion controls. Some of the best games I played on it were either Gamecube ports with new and improved controller options, the Mario Galaxy games were perhaps the only Wii games I really loved. Although I'm not all that fussed about power generally, the graphics (or more, the resolution) made everything on the Wii feel incredibly dated, even from day one, and I recall playing games like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories late on and loving the game but it really standing out as being fairly ugly. Even Skyward Sword, for its great art style looked fuzzy. It's a shame because I really do think that even with the same graphics, just rendering at 1080p would have made such a difference. Dolphin proves that.
The new Hollow Knight expansion for Shovel Knight is not beting released for the U due to - yep, you got it! - "technical challenges". It seems that these challenges appeared after Nintendo had chatted with Yacht Club and, funnily enough, the game is now going to arrive for the Switch soon after launch.
There were another couple of similar announcements yesterday but I can't be bothered to look them up again; tears are in my eyes and they're starting to sting. Zelda is going to be one helluva swan-song, though .
It's sad to think that we'll no longer see games arriving for it. I don't like it when consoles reach the end of their lifetime. But...
Given time, I find that the older machines are fondly remembered and often brought back out of the cupboard now-and-again for gaming sessions. There may not be new games but we can continue to enjoy the ones that were released .
The next few GR Mario Kart Monday sessions, and the GR Mario Maker final, are going to be special. Let's do this for the U .
Whenever I see articles on Nintendolife etc with comments sections full of 'Rubbish console' I just don't understand it. The console & games have been fantastic as far as I'm concerned.
Maybe not many games took advantage of the gamepad - why does that make the console bad? Maybe it was marketed badly - again, I just don't get the hate, it's just not relevant to my gaming experience.
I don't think I can name my favourite Nintendo console of all time, but right now the Wii U does exactly what I want it to.
