PostNME ceases publication of print edition.
by more heat than light » Mon Jul 06, 2015 9:53 pm

:(

The NME is to cease publication in print after 66 years, the weekly music title joining a growing list of once mighty magazine brands that now only exist online.

The NME.com website will continue, replacing the print edition’s cover star interview with a new weekly digital franchise, The Big Read.

The NME will continue to keep a sporadic presence in print with special issues such as its paid-for series NME Gold, to cater for music stars’ appetite for appearing in a printed product.

Music magazine NME is to be given away free from September in a bid to boost its circulation.

The weekly publication, which currently sells about 15,000 copies, will be distributed at train stations, shops and student unions around the country.

Its cover price of £2.50 will be waived and the print run increased to 300,000.

Publisher Time Inc said music would stay "at the heart of the brand", but the magazine will also expand to cover film, fashion, TV, politics and gaming.

NME editor Mike Williams said: "NME is already a major player and massive influencer in the music space, but with this transformation we'll be bigger, stronger and more influential than ever before.

"Every media brand is on a journey into a digital future. That doesn't mean leaving print behind, but it does mean that print has to change. The future is an exciting place, and NME just kicked the door down."

Launched in 1952 as the New Musical Express, the magazine sold in six figures in its heyday and was an influential part of the music landscape.

It helped launched the careers of writers including Julie Burchill, Tony Parsons and Danny Baker.

NME.com launched in 1996 as one of the first music websites. But as the brand reached almost four million people each week digitally, its print circulation steadily dropped.

Baker greeted the move on Twitter, posting a picture of him at its office in 1979 and saying: "And so... the NME is a free sheet now. Why not? The game's up and the fire's gone out

Well that's one way to combat the decline in print media...

Not a fan of NME by any means, but this could be a very smart move on their part

Every time I see it in the newsagents it's either strawberry floating Noel Gallagher or the Libertines on the cover.

Have to echo the thoughts of others re: NME. They frequently - and utterly relentlessly - champion such uninspiring bang-average drivel, at the detriment of many many superior unsigned bands and artists.

I went through a phase in my early 20's (ie like 15 years ago) where I was a pretentious hipster wanker. Literally every band that NME championed would we worshipped whether I'd heard anything by them or not. I even bought Terris's album (Wiki it if you're under 30). Still, it did make me buy my first pair of Converse, which is good I guess.

Haven't bought it in years, but I'd have a read if it was free. It's good for gig listings if nothing else.

I'm actually in hipster wank, but I hate the NME. It's the way it's written just makes me want to pull my hair out. They just hype everything up to the point of stupidity.

I can kind of see this working along the lines of Metro as a free mag for more hipster young city types. Although surely it will be plagued with ads and advertorial.

Not that I give a gooseberry fool. I don't think I've ever read the magazine, I've landed up NME.com a couple of times. No doubting its an iconic brand though.

NME's problem is it still worships the bland shite that was popular ten years ago. Noel Gallagher and The Libertines wont save the day. Calling them pretentious isn't really right, they've become such an 'uncool' magazine in the wake of stuff like Pitchfork and Vice.

Their website is alright if you dig around, but the magazine is such pandering shite desperately clinging onto an audience that isn't relevant.

So... er... how will they make money? Will advertising revenue actually be enough to prevent them making a massive loss?

Essentially, yeah. Will be interesting to see how well it does. I honestly expect "not very".

Especially as the banana splits ALWAYS play it in the wrong key, ie without a capo when it needs one on the 2nd fret. Completely different song without it. Twats.

When I was at uni and basically trying to get laid I'd play some mad complex stuff for a while and then it would be "yeah but can you play wonderwall m8". strawberry float off. Its like 3 chords but I forgot the song (even though I did learn it when I was about 7) because I don't care.

Oh well, eventually I met a lady that pretty much wanted it whenever I practised instead of being all like omg amaze what are you lyk can u teach me lol and then going very quiet and weird (unfortunately this is what happens when you don't play wonderwall).

I occasionally picked it up alongside the Evening Standard. I think the last article I read was about Katherine Ryan's masturbation habits. Or something like that.

Never paid for a copy though.
