One thing I've been wondering is how they're managing the planet stuff. How big would that play area be? There's no way they could render large planet surfaces. Would ecology vary across a single planet or is everything on one planet the same and all within 100 yards of your landing spot?

One biome per planet. So while you won't see vastly different ecology, but there will be variety in landscape, and features (caves, buildings and other constructions made by intelligent beings) to seek out.

I do think one-biome-per-planet is kind of a weird choice. Even two-biomes-per-planet (equatorial and polar) would have been more realistic and believable.

Bear in mind that they are explicitly going for the pulp sci-fi universe approach. There are many things about the game that are widely unrealistic, like how close together planets and stars are. One interview I saw had them talk about how they tried placing planets at more realistic distances from each other but it just made the game more boring and less "sci-fi" - the alien world vista with a gigantic planet rising above the horizon is a prevalent trope in the style the game emulates. One biome per planet is equally as unrealistic, but again more accurately mimics most pulp sci-fi. "Forest moon of Endor", "Ice planet Hoth" and "Desert planet Tatooine" are all dumb and unrealistic but they have a charm to them that I'm glad will be in NMS.

Well I guess the processor is being pushed pretty hard, but some kind of environmental interpolation from pole to equator doesn't sound too tricky to do.

Mind you, you then have to consider the angle of the planet's rotational axis relative to the orbital plane. Uranus (ha ha) for example doesn't so much spin as roll around the sun. Crazy times.

I'm not even sure there are gas giants in NMS. It's clear that NMS is far from diverse in comparison to the Universe or even our own solar system.

For all that, I think NMS looks very impressive. I hope the technology is adaptable enough to be expanded and we see further applications of it.

Are there comets? Black holes? I don't know. The most important question is, "Is it fun?".

I remember that some folk were asking about the cheapest price for pre-ordering No Man's Sky on PS4. Does £37.34 (including delivery) cut it?

If so... The Games Collection - use discount code BIRTHDAY11 and order before midnight.

do you often start a single player game expecting to meet up with friends. strange.

It's not the MADDEST question on earth considering its's closest rival (Elite) is an MMO with Co-op integration as the norm. Hopefully this will be patched in at a later date.

seriously.... safe to assume that no one on PS4 has played Elite on erm PS4 to even contemplate this and there are legion of space games on PC that do not include online. stupid comparison make you.

Yungstar, why are you being so uppity about Peter being confused about the state of multiplayer in this game? Hello Games have been pretty unclear up to this point about how, if at all, interaction between players will work. You could well argue that multiplayer is expected in almost every game these days. It's inclusion is certainly the norm, rather than the exception. With the lack of a well publicised and clear denial that there will be anything close to traditional multiplayer, it's not that much of a stretch to understand that plenty of people will assume it's in there.

Think I might go digital with this one. I have a 20 wrap PSN voucher which means it would only cost me 30 royals.

Still going to wait for some reviews and impressions before I pull the trigger though.

My intention is to triple dip; PS4 CE/digital and digital PC.

CE will be day one, regardless of how it reviews.

There have been a few games this gen where it seems like devs have made games I always wanted but wasn't aware of the fact until they made 'em. NMS was the first (the other ones being Horizon: Zero Dawn and Dangerous Golf) and the one which enthuses me the most. (Though Robo Dinos The Games makes a v close 2nd.)

Can't help but feel like some of this vagueness is intentional by them, to try and scoop up orders by being as many people's dream game as possible.
Singleplayer minecraft em up with ships doesn't have quite the same range of appeal

Ha! As if Hello Games needs to lead people on  NMS has proven time and again how utterly lazy people can be when it comes to doing the most basic research on a game. A game they're interested in! If it's not spoon fed to them in a trailer then they don't know about it. Well, that's how it works everywhere but here...

I'm sorry but, how many times do you see a dev put 'well publicised and clear' info out there saying what their game *isn't*?!

Any time they have been asked if the game has traditional co-op/MP play they've been absolutely clear. It was one of the first bits of info they put out there: the thread was created the morning after the game was shown, the very next day there's a post on page 2 saying there wouldn't be MP. Whenever Sean spoke of other people in the game he referenced Dark Souls and how it had ghostly apparitions of other players running about the place, nothing about getting people to join your game to go on adventures.

Some guy bought the game early via eBay. They uploaded footage of their first planet: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4mf13s

Nope. Never mind. Footage removed. :fp:

I will be waiting a while for the price to drop, not paying £40 for it.
