Eurogamer wrote:The first, most striking aspect of NEXT is, unsurprisingly, its visual overhaul and, as its recent trailer will attest, it's genuinely remarkable just how different No Man's Sky looks. Its massively improved lighting engine, better atmospheric effects, and significantly increased draw distances, alongside a gorgeous new cloud rendering technology, improved textures, water, an optional new third-person camera, combine to create a much more nuanced aesthetic.

It certainly sounds like it'll be worth a look.

Finally!!! I have no idea why this wasn't included in by default as it's such a basic feature but makes such a huge difference when playing the game. I hate the first person camera in space games as you never get a sense of what's around you.

BUT, I definitely understand the attraction. It's a beautiful game, and I get the appeal. I just wish I could experience it

I bought it second hand for a tenner in June and it didn't gel with me either. I'm still curious to see if NEXT will make the Cosmos less tedious.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

I was so tempted to watch that but I have resisted. I want to play the update "fresh" and experience it for myself!

I think I will play the game later today to remind myself of the mechanisms and graphics; both to refresh my memory and so that I can better appreciate the changes when they launch.

Is there a mode on this now that is effectively free-roam where you can just travel about without the need to get fuel etc?
Platinumed this bloody ages ago and stopped playing but my 9-year old lad plays it occasionally on my save. Unfortunately he burns through fuel and mining tool ammo and then calls for me to sort out the situation, which is usually rather irritating as I have to walk about searching for Plutonium crystals to get him back in the air. He's not had the materials to warp for donkey's.

That sounds brilliant for him. Thanks Jawa. I'll set him up on that tomorrow.
Never built a base, but I reckon he won't care about that so I won't have to teach him. He just loves exploring and creating his own narratives in his head.

Reinstalled the game today and now downloading all the patches in preparation for tomorrow.
The trailer did excite me but after that launch I'm keeping my expectations in check.

I also reinstalled the game over the weekend and put in an hour or two.

Found a crashed ship within an hour that was substantially better than my first one so I'm currently buying up the additional cargo space it has. Not found any suit upgrades yet though.

Forgot how much I enjoyed just travelling around the expanses it creates. Looking forward to the update.

I'm now really excited for the NEXT update. I think I'll probably start the game afresh once the download is available; I *believe* it's scheduled for 16:00 tomorrow.

Hello Games have posted a news message today:

We always wanted No Man’s Sky to grow and develop after it released. I’m happy we’ve been able to do that.

I am so proud of the team at Hello Games, what they did was incredible. Over the years of development the average team size was 6, the final team was just 15 people at launch. No Man’s Sky has grown to be a very broad game, ambitious, technically unique and very pretty at times, all the more impressive for a team that is still small.

Whilst I couldn’t be prouder of the team, I personally made mistakes. I could talk all day about things I personally would change. Certainly one regret is that the intensity and drama of launch left no room for communication with the community.

We decided instead to focus on development rather than words. Following Foundation, Pathfinder and Atlas Rises, we really want to include you, the community, more.

We know that a million gamers played on the day we launched Atlas Rises. That everyone who bought Atlas Rises played for 45 hours on average and 90% rated it positively. We know that 20% of players hit over 100 hours, and 5% hit over 1000. We know that over 200 million hours of No Man’s Sky have been played to date. It makes us happy, but desperate to communicate better.

A little while after the release of No Man’s Sky NEXT, Hello Games has planned its first season of weekly content and community events. This will be free for all players, with no microtransactions.

We are also launching a new website dedicated to the community, which we’re calling the Galactic Atlas. The site features points of interest in the No Man’s Sky Euclid Galaxy, all nominated by you through the survey we created earlier this month. This will grow in functionality and expand over time, in part through your feedback.

The surveys for Atlas Rises will stay open until the launch of NEXT, so there is still an opportunity to contribute to the archive!

One day I hope to reach a point where I feel No Man’s Sky is “finished”, but luckily there’s still so much more we want to do. Working on NEXT feels important to us, but I know it’s not the end of the journey. We know the journey would be more fun together.

Thank you for playing No Man’s Sky, thank you for playing Waking Titan, and we hope you enjoy everything still to come.

Sean

Respect to them for keeping at it. I can’t wait to restart the game - it really is like a whole new sequel for free. I got this digitally on launch and really liked the concept at the beginning, even spending hours on it. I do believe that this update makes it a top game and hope it sells well enough so that they build a proper sequel on next gen consoles.

Looking at my PS4 notifications right now and it says "No Man's Sky NEXT Update Tue, 24 Jul 17:00 - Tue, 7 Aug, 2:00"

Why is it for a limited period? Are they going to sell NMS NEXT as a new product?

An I being daft? O_o

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Might just be because the calendar event things on PS4 need to have an end date to work.

I clicked on the notification.

On the full page it says: "Signup Deadline Tue, 7 Aug, 2:00"

Also, you need to have a PS+ account.

Yeah, it's just an event to celebrate the launch of NEXT. The PS Plus requirement is because online play is involved. I've signed up to it :-) .

Rumours abound that the NEXT update will become available from 14:00 on Xbox (i.e. when the MS Store usually releases updates) and 16:00 on PS4 (i.e. when the PSN No Man's Sky event starts).

In the end I didn't "brush up" on the game by replaying it for a bit; I plan to start a fresh save right from the beginning. I am getting excited; I can't wait to try this out!
