I just love the concept of this and the E3 stuff has looked so impressive. Still can't believe it's coming from such a small studio.

There's a preview up on PC Gamer that sheds a bit more light on gameplay:

Described by Hello's managing director, Sean Murray, as a "Han Solo simulator," it'll start you out on a little planet around the edge of its procedurally generated galaxy. Things on the galactic edge are easier, but maybe less interesting and/or lucrative. You can stick around and explore, scanning for useful materials and mining them for cash, or you can jump into your "life pod," a small starter spacecraft that can't venture beyond your current solar system, and start visiting other planets.

If you want to be a soldier, says Murray, you can take your life pod to a spaceport, buy a sturdier weaponized spaceship, and start hunting for enemies or protecting friendly ships, all with the goal of eventually becoming an unstoppable interstellar warrior. If you want to make money more quickly, you can start mining materials and selling them, eventually buying your own freighter to truck them across the cosmos. Or you can spend your time exploring and cataloging new species. The plan is to make it as free-form as possible, with no narrative but the one in your head; imagine Skyrim with spaceships, no quests, and the make-your-own-fun ethos of Minecraft's survival mode, and you'll have an idea of the vision here.

It sounds like a lighter take on Elite, with a bit of Minecraft and a big focus on exploration. It sounds wonderful basically.

If there's no story, is there at least some way to find out about the various spacefaring civilizations, who they're at war with etc?

Murray's hinted at there being lore to discover that he's being deliberately vague about. I'm not sure how deep that will go. The exploration alone sounds incredible though. The planets are all meant to be enourmous and offer varied environments, so even before you gain an interstellar craft there should be loads to discover.

I still think that sounds like you will run out of things to do, flying around aimlessly is fun to do for a few hours but gets boring eventually (for example any open world game ever). People don't usually play Minecraft to explore.
They have a great start, they just need to focus on the planet/life element more. Add building, the ability to create or join civilizations, fight wars etc.

I just don't want it to end up like Spore.

I wonder if this game will lead to the formation of factions and communities like in Eve. Honestly, Eve never really appealed to me because one look at the massive menus and volumes of data in that game was enough to scare me away. This looks much more welcoming to someone like me (i.e. a mid-level intelligence gamer with a day job). Possible it will end up functioning as a gateway drug to this type of genre.

It's kind of the anti-Eve. Eve starts everyone in one of three areas near the centre of its galaxy, in heavily policed, crowded space. As you progress you head outwards and move to uncontrolled and unexplored space which is where most of the action happens. It's designed so that everyone has an impact on the galaxy, but also to be a mostly single player experience.

No Mans Sky starts everyone on a different planet at the edge of the galaxy, light years from anyone else, and things get more interesting the further you head towards the centre, and presumably the likelyhood of encountering other players and their discoveries picks up as you do.

You can definitely gather resources to improve your ship, and possibly buy new ships. You can also hire AI wingmen, and indeed fight. Murray gave the example that you can choose to assist the pirates attacking the frighters in the new trailer for a share of the spoils, or help defend the freighters, or ignore everything and go your own way. Like Elite, you can just fly around aimlessly but it's up to you to make your own goals.

You will inevitably get bored of sandbox games, but a good one can keep you enthralled for a very long time before that happens.

I hope it's not too buggy. The big problem with sandbox games is the bugginess.

Manny, you should know by now it isn't just about aimless exploration. It was known after its first showing at VGX that the game had a aim. Also that there would be resource and crafting systems. And since its showing at E3 this year we know we will be able to work as fighter/freight pilots. I'm sure there'll be other things to do too. You will have to explore to gather materials to buy gear and ship/parts to get further into the universe but it won't be "aimless", unless that's what you want.

Maybe I've misunderstood the developers, but from what I gathered this is a single player game, we all share the same universe, so can discover things and share them with friends and have our names attached if no one else has discovered them yet, but there won't be millions of people all playing together on one massive server. While that does sounds like an amazing concept, and might be a natural progression for a big budget sequel, you have to remember this is an indie game.

In the IGN vid up there^ (and elsewhere) Murray says players will be playing in the same world but will be so far apart chances are they will never meet another player.

It better have a phenomenal soundtrack to heighten that sense of isolation.

Hopefully the chat went well and they'll be doing the soundtrack. It was their Debutante track that was used on the VGX and E3 trailers.

I timed that post just right.

I was hoping for music a bit more along the lines of FTL, BSG or Metroid, but I won't judge the soundtrack by one song so I remain really hopeful we'll get some sweet spacey synth.

We're all playing in the same universe because it is being procedurally generated by the developers computers not by our machines. However it's not an MMO game, and everything the developers have said seems to be worded in a certain way that confirms the game is single player, with social online elements like those I mentioned. If the developers have said something to suggest otherwise please point me towards it, like in the IGN video that I watched through twice. I also was watching the Giant Bomb live show where the GB crew mentioned the game is single player but you can explore the same areas with a friend as the world will be consistent between different players, so pretty much like any single player game really. The developers were on right after that and didn't offer to correct this nor mention anything about multiplayer or meeting any other players.

Also when you consider the server technology required to make something like this an MMO, provided it sells more than 1000 copies, it's simply not going to happen from a team of 10 people on a tiny budget. I'd love to be wrong however.

There have been a few interviews with Murray at E3 where he's said that you can indeed meet other players, just that it won't be often or likely. To quote the PCG article again:

Does this mean No Man's Sky is an MMO? No, says Murray, although you will meet other players. He compares it to the PlayStation 3 game Journey, where players can drift into your game unexpectedly, making such encounters a potentially more special experience. It's not clear yet whether that'll be through behind-the-scenes matchmaking or just by dint of players' starting planets being so spread out, but it certainly sounds intriguing.

If the Journey comparison is accurate, if you do end up in the same place as one or more others there's a chance you will join their game temporarily but you won't be flying around for hours as a party. Presumably if every player managed to make their way to the same point you wouldn't all enter the same instance, rather everyone would have a chance of pairing up with one or two others for a bit. The persistent changes and discoveries you can make however will be shared with all players.

It's definitely designed to be 99% single player though. Everyone is scattered as far apart as possible to start with with no interstellar capabilities. It should be some time before anyone starts running into discoveries others have made, let alone other players.
