I'm still playing it. I get that it's quite repetitive and shallow, but I love it. I've always wanted a game where I could explore loads of different planets and do basic stuff like mining and upgrading, so even though it might seem a bit boring, it's just my cup of tea. Totally get why it isn't the majority of people's though.

Is there a way of seeing how many hours you've played the game for? I must have put in at least 15 and I've not even left my starting planet. :fp:

I'll probably be picking this up with death's head. Although studying a PGCE so don't really have any time to study.

I'm not still playing it, but I did play it for a good few weeks straight and enjoyed what there was of it. But then I am not someone who minds a bit of mindless grinding for materials.

So... Atlas stones. I reached the final (?) point and didn't have ten Atlas stones so I couldn't create a star. I guess that mission line is over, then. I seem to be on a journey to the centre of the universe now. I went through my first black hole, which destroyed my ship's warp reactor and so I have to build another one :x .

I'm not sure if I'll carry on to the centre or just potter about and visit odd planets now.

Can't recall their price point, but I am pretty sure Atlas Stones can be purchased from space station vendors.

Thanks, Saint - yeah, I looked that up and you can buy them but they cost an absolute fortune :-) .

I may just wander around and explore more planets... or I may take this as a jumping-off point. I've really enjoyed the journey but maybe it's time for me to play a new game now.

Yeah Black Holes are pretty much not worth it at all. They destroy some of your equipment and more often than not they don't get you any closer to the centre, it's usually just a sideways step rather than a forward one.
In the end I just used a mod that increased your Jump range by 10,000x and jumped directly to the system right before the centre.

If you're a bit of an old git like me, you'll probably be aware of the legendary coder Jeff Minter. He is a marmite kinda guy; personally I like his style and anyone who makes a game called Metagalactic Llamas Battle At The Edge Of Time gets my respect.

Anyway, I somehow missed his blog about No Man's Sky and it's ace.

Jeff Minter wrote:...the impression I got of the game pre-launch is that it’d likely be something like European Truck Simulator set in a Roger Dean universe, and that’s pretty close to what we got.... Can’t say I’m that bothered about multiplayer to be honest, the last thing I’d want is griefers invading my nice peaceful galactic Sunday walk simulator.

  .

Pretty much exactly my take on it.

My favourite bit of euro truck simulator is having to constantly get out of the truck break gooseberry fool and refuel said truck every 30 minutes.

And when you get to the depot to be greeted by a paragraph of text.

I like that the bank is simply called Bank.

I liked this bit best -

Imagine how unpleasant career trolls could make this game if it were multiplayer! :dread:

Hello Games have finally spoken,

Hello,

This week Hello Games will be releasing an update to No Man’s Sky. We’re calling it The Foundation Update, because we have added the foundations of base building, and also because this is putting in place a foundation for things to come.

Detailed patch notes will follow, and release will be soon.

Coming from five years of intense development, immediately after No Man’s Sky released the team spent six weeks updating the game with 7 patches across both platforms (the last of these was 1.09 on Sept 24th which you can read about them all here http://www.no-mans-sky.com/log/). These fixed many of the most common or critical bugs and issues post-release.

In the nine weeks since then our small team has been hard at work on development, testing and certification for the Foundation Update. It won’t be our biggest update, but it is the start of something.

The discussion around No Man’s Sky since release has been intense and dramatic. We have been quiet, but we are listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about.

Positive or negative feedback, you have been heard and that will truly help to make this a better game for everyone.

This update will be the first small step in a longer journey. We hope you can join us.

Thank you,
Hello Games

Personally I think it'll be too little too late, especially of even after all this time they're just releasing updates that are to prepare for more updates, but we'll see.

Also, what's the point of base building at all? The point is to travel vast distances across the galaxy to the centre, at which point you just get punted to another galaxy and told to do it all over again.

Indeed, I can't work out the functionality of base building at all. Freighters and capital ships could have obvious benefits, but why bother building a base I'll likely never see again (since it's virtually impossible to find my way back anywhere)...?

Bases could act as beacons you could find on the galactic map with ease, allowing you to return quickly to neat worlds you've discovered. Maybe? Honestly just seems like something that sounded cool in concept but has little practical application in what seem to be throwaway galaxies.

I'm pleased to see that, now the shorter-term fixes have been implemented, Hello Games are focusing on expanding the adventure. To be honest, I doubt that *anything* they do will stop some folk griping about the game. I had hoped - and expressed confidence in this very thread - that the game would see lots of further development and it appears that this could well be the case.
