Also have they fixed the completely borked on-rails flying where the ship basically flies itself above the planet's surface? I wasn't a fan of that.

Nope. They really should give you a little more control over the ship and if you strawberry float it up by crashing into a mountain then so be it.

I think you have to find a habitable base first and then expand it? Star system scan now tags habitable bases.

That's my biggest issue with the game. The detachment I feel from piloting my ship, which is only exacerbated by lack of customisation, really needs to be adressed.

Perhaps the problem is that one might try to use one's ship to mine and blast the robot things, and even though the weapons fire in-atmosphere, they don't seem to affect anything?

How hard can it really be to change that?

I've was totally uninterested in base building when it was announced. Now I've just built my first one and I'm hooked.

So are there only certain specific places you can build, and only on some planets?

Would love to get into this base building asap

Can I just ask - what's the purpose of base building? For a game that's about constantly striving to move further into the heart of the galaxy and simply visiting planets on the way, why would you have the need to stay anywhere long enough to need a base? Surely once you've spent a large amount of time (and credits) on your new base you'll have to leave that planet and probably never return to it.

Not baiting, genuinely curious how Hello Games thinks will fit into the game.

Just build a comms array or whatever its called. It will then point you to a base you can inhabit. Bases are a single round pod which you can then expand on.

And Iron now seems to be the most useful element.

Thought I'd read it somewhere, but I haven't gotten around to base building yet - too busy amassing millions so I can buy a freighter...

You can fast travel between your base and a space station using a new portal. Your ship also magically appears at whichever end you're at (I have a slight issue with this). Not sure if it works between solar systems though, I've a feeling it's probably limited to the system you're in.

Your base also comes with a handy previous base cache thingy. No idea how that works as have only built one base. I'd suggest bases are meant to be fairly temporary whilst you exploit the resources in a system. My only aside to this though is that the specialists available to hire are dependent on the system you're in (Gek seem to be builders, Korvax are Scientists) so there must be some way of going back. Haven't checked if systems are now tagged as Gex etc before you go there.

the game shows you how to do it, use the + pad to select the item. if its green you can place an item, red you can't.

it's a very easy system to use.

Shows you when? Sorry for being obtuse, but I couldn't see anything to build (like no comms array) from my inventory/crafting screen.

When you're walking around just press down (or it might be up) on the d pad. A build overlay menu comes up at the bottom of the screen and then you can place in the environment (as long as you have the resources). You'll need iron, probably around 40-50.

I liked NMS quite a bit before this update and none of the advertised features (base building, freighters etc) made me think it would be an improvement. I was very wrong.

EDIT: One thought, if they stuck this on PSVR then I'd buy one tomorrow.

great game before this update, even better now.

hyper-jumped to a new location, arrived and told freighter under attack, went to its rescue and then was able to land on it and buy it. :D
