No Man's Sky, the ambitious open-space exploration game in a procedurally-generated universe, just received a massive update appropriately named NEXT.

It brings a whole bunch of changes and additions across the board, most notably:

- Option to switch between first and third person view at will
- Visual upgrades to ships, NPCs, buildings, terrain textures, space vistas - pretty much everything
- You can now build far more complex bases anywhere on the planet
- Build your own fleet, upgrade it, and send it out or keep it close while exploring a system

The multiplayer element of NEXT is not yet included in the DRM-free edition of the game. Read more about the delay below:

"From launch, the DRM-free edition of No Man's Sky will include all single-player content introduced by NEXT: third-person mode, upgraded visuals, better base building, player customization, and more.

However the multiplayer component will not be ready at launch; we expect it to be released later this year as full multiplayer parity remains in the pipeline.

For a small, independent studio, developing the feature across multiple platforms is a hugely ambitious and technical challenge which resulted in this delayed release. Hello Games is however joining forces with GOG.COM to introduce full multiplayer via the GOG Galaxy platform.

We appreciate your immense support and patience.

So glad I unknowingly decided to buy the broken edition.

Bought this about a year ago, kept meaning to get around to it, but once we got word of NEXT, I decided to hold off, so finally got to try it last night.

It's pretty unforgiving at the start! Kept dying due to radiation/toxicity before I even knew what was going on. Reached the point now where my ship is fixed up and ready to go into space, but I want to hang about a bit and gather more resources before leaving. Can I fly around the planet in my ship, or would taking off just start a sequence where I jump to another? I can see some resource deposits but at the moment they're too far to walk to and get back to my ship before my environmental protection depletes.

I guess I also need to figure out what sort of planet is good for building a base on. From what I understand it, planets either look nice, or are rich in resources, but very, very rarely both?

I'm seriously questioning using GOG as a platform for new games off the back of this. While I want to support a DRM free model, getting a second tier product compared to the Steam version, a form of DRM that is ultimately very livewithable, doesn't seem like a good trade off.

You can take off, fly around the planet, fly into space if you like then fly back to the planet or fly to other planets/moons/space stations etc.

You'll need a pulse drive to get anywhere quickly though. You won't leave the system until you've got a charged hyper-drive.

It is very tough at the start, Grin - it's hard to tell what is going on and you're not quite sure what to do. When the game was first released it was - IMHO - easier to get into, and I think that's because planets are now more likely to be hot / cold / toxic than before.

It took me a while to get into it last night. Things have changed... probably for the better, but it takes time to adjust. The third-person view is cool and I'm sticking with that at present. Repairs can now be done in stages and there are more "things" / material types to collect and use. Inventory spaces have changed too. I'm kinda glad that I decided to start afresh as I am so rusty on things.

Right now I gotta get an object (some kinda seal) for the ship and I haven't worked out how to make it yet.

You can go and fly wherever you want, Grin. By all means you can stay on your starting planet for a while; wander around and look at different things. You may find that you need other equipment / abilities in order to mine / collect some things... and that's where the adventure begins!

Yeah, as I touched on before, I don't think there are as many "all round friendly" planets as there were at launch. On most planets there will be some form of environmental challenge. No one planet will be perfect; you gotta work out one where, for you, the pros outweigh the cons.

You can shelter in caves to recharge your environmental protection. Handy for reaching resources that are a bit too far away.

I started a new game and it put me on a highly radioactive planet with frenzied sentinels so I strawberry floated that one off immediately and started again.

I did that too, Maf. The first planet was hugely toxic and barren. Re-started and the planet was very hot but okay apart from that. Much more manageable! Tbh I think the game should start players on a reasonably friendly planet; there's enough to learn as it is without being killed by the environment within seconds!

I'm tempted to start a fresh game, as I think the update glitched a little bit of mine (My suit went from just the basic inventory to fully unlocked).

It also seems to have totally changed one of the planets I was on, though it now looks lush as hell and has an awesome ring around it.

Lots of changes to what charges things as well. Using Plutonium to charge the ship has changed to Uranium and now I need to get oxygen for the suit instead.

I couldn't find any uranium which was a worry, but you can make fuel for your launch thrusters using metal sheets (made from ferrite dust) and di-hybluestuff.

All the stars planets and moons have changed.

Yeah I'd seen the new options for powering it up. Definitely feels a little bit harder in terms of the basics than it did before. Still enjoying it so far. Ended my play session last night by returning to the space station to sell my loot and I like the new layouts there.

There was another game that had this issue a few years ago which is why I'm reluctant to buy new games on GOG. You can get a refund for No Man's Sky though.

Really getting into this now surprisingly. It's such a shame Hello Games couldn't have delayed this by 18 months. Bye bye life for a few weeks!

I was about to be impressed by the extension, but it's a refund in wallet funds, so you can only spend it on GOG, and can't use the refund to buy again on Steam.

Downloaded the update now, so I'll give it a go without the multiplayer for the time being.

I'm a bit conflicted about this. On one hand, yes I am annoyed I can't play the multiplayer part yet. On the other the multiplayer part is something extra we are getting for free and it is kind of out of GOG's control, I'm sure there is some extra work involved in getting games ready for different environments, like Steam or gog. Just getting all the other items in the update is ok with me given the multiplayer is coming down the pipe.

It wasn't exactly handled very well though, especially as some people might have bought on gog recently after the news of NEXT came out. Those people do have a legitimate right to be pissed.

I've repaired my ship!

Man, the things you have to do are way more complex than before; and I like it. It's great how you can collect stuff, construct things and repair on a bit-by-bit basis.

I'm gonna have another look around the planet.. and then I'll be off into space. The adventure begins here :toot: .

Quick question: Have any of you guys started a fresh game and redeemed any of the pre-order / bonus items? I recall at launch there were a few probs with these items but I guess they're okay now?

The update and extra content is obviously fantastic. In general, Hello Games' ongoing support for this has been brilliant, and has transformed a very dull game into a really interesting one.

What's frustrating, is that the availability of support is being determined by what store front you might have bought from long before update details were available. I bought the same game from a different site, and for some reason, this means less support for the product. I paid the same as a lot of Steam users, for the same game, but now much further down the line, the products are diverging.

Quick question regarding the Gog version. What is the version number supposed to be? In the my games page on the website it shows that it hasn't been updated. There's no blue dot next to the game and the version is listed as 1.5. Do I need to install gog galaxy to get the update?
