PostNon gaming apps for PlayStation platforms

We’ve mentioned an AppStore-esque interface and tools for the PSP and PS3 before (nearly a year ago, in fact) on TheSixthAxis, but last week’s GDC saw this finally come to life, with the “Skinny” software development kit (SDK).

Although a quick search on the official channels was fruitless, Develop is reporting that the cleverly named Skinny is a lightweight tool that will allow content creators to get non-game applications onto the PSN Store, easily.

Sony is describing Skinny as “a simple yet effective means for content holders to put their intellectual property on the PlayStation platforms without software development” and cites a day as the average time it takes to create the app.

Skinny is “ideal” for “strategy guides, game maps, cheats, training manuals, episodic videos, eBooks and eMagazines” and consists of a web-based editor/authouring tool and a software client for both the PS3 and PSP.

The user creations still require submission to Sony for approval, but this will quickly pave the way for lots of mini-apps on the PlayStation Store. Look out for a TheSixthAxis app on your PSP as soon as we get our hands on it…

This is something that Andrew Mills could find useful :shifty: Also some apps can be pulled in game on PS3 is the word around the camp fire. So a strategy guide would be an awesome edition nod nod wink wink Andrew ;)

The SDK that powers Digital Comics. Would probably need to be very cheap or free to get developers on board though.

I'd buy Demon's Souls strategy guide. It is bloody hard!

Could be very useful, I've got a couple on me Ipod that are handy. Weren't Microsoft going to do some form of guide thing in game as well?

This sort of thing would bode well for future pre-order offers etc, possibly offer a digital version of a strategy guide for free or something

Web based editor means it's all just content delivery, and they're all going to look very similar for the most part.

Very interesting indeed.

How long before someone ports a compatible API to the App store?

I was about to say, non gaming apps are needed because it's got no games to play on it. 8-)

strawberry float yea... 8-)

My iPhone guides are web-based (although offline, so don't need web access to use), so this sounds like a perfect thing for me as I'll have all the HTML already ready (although it may need to be tweaked for the resolution increase).

Will need to look into this a lot more, as the content needs to be chargeable.

But it sets an interesting precedent, as if Sony are actively pimping unofficial strategy guides on their own consoles, their eating into the official deals made by the likes of Piggyback, Prima, Bradygames etc.

Interesting indeed...

Oh and what's that I have already written? A 20,000 word God of War 3 guide you say? Excellent... :shifty:

*edit*
I'm also a bit worried as there'll be a flood of really gooseberry fool guides that can be punted onto the service - too easily - from twats who can't write a decent strategy guide (and before anyone comments, I've been writing them semi-professionally for over 3 years now :P ).

Yeah, what I really need is a game guide that I can't access while playing the game.

I'm pretty sure it's more aimed at people like Suzz who just buy any old gooseberry fool off PSN or Rik who just buys anything related to something you might have once referred to as a game rather than people who actually need a guide.

People who get momentarily stuck in games just hot foot it to GameFAQs.
