EVERYBODY loves good Neighbours - which is why Ramsay Street residents will be distraught at the permanent departure of old fave Harold Bishop.

Veteran actor Ian Smith - who plays the golden oldie - has decided to leave Five's Aussie soap for good.

Last November the 70-year-old agreed to continue in his role as the bumbling character on a part-time basis after negotiations with the show’s bosses.

But now producers have announced his final episode will be filmed in October.

A spokeswoman for Australia’s Channel 10 - which makes the soap - said: "It was entirely his decision. We love him and would have loved to keep him."

It’s thought his last storyline will see Harold leave Erinsborough after beating prostate cancer.

Ian joined the show in 1987 but left for five years in 1991 after Harold was swept away to sea. The character returned in 1996 suffering from amnesia.
