That would provide some basis for a quick turnaround and apparant willingness to abandon current strategy.

Maybe after the collapse of the testing facility, the NK leadership realised that nuclear weapons were quite dangerous and could cause damage.

Maybe the excitement will finally finish him off though.

I'm a bit cautious about this. But, man, watching the BBC news video about it, they both seem very sincere.

I assume they don't even have security vehicles. They probably ran across the border.

I think it's good that this might lead to some down shifting in tension. I think even if Kim doesn't disarm stopping him doing more nuclear tests is a good thing. The thing that people seem not to be talking about is the treatment of the average citizen in North Korea. I really think we should be pushing to try and end some of the harsh gooseberry fool that happens in the North. That said hopefully this can lead to a slow liberalization of North Korea even if it doesn't end the Kim's families reign.

It's the same strategy he's been following all along - act up, get more threatening to bring foes to bargaining table, negotiate and calm down, claim foul play and act up again later. It's almost an annual event.

Oh, and...

President Trump was met Saturday with chants suggesting that he be given the Nobel Peace Prize, as he discussed possible talks with North Korea.

"That's very nice, thank you. That's very nice," Trump replied to chants of "Nobel, Nobel, Nobel."

"I just want to get the job done," he added. The chants came as Trump spoke at a campaign-style rally in Washington Township, Michigan.

Trump is expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in late May or sometime in June. The encounter will mark the first such meeting between a sitting U.S. president and leader North Korean leader.

Trump's remarks on Saturday come just one day after Kim became the first North Korean leader to cross into South Korea, where he met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the two leaders vowed to work toward eliminating all nuclear weapons from the Korean peninsula. The two also stated plans to enter into talks with the U.S. about declaring a formal end to the Korean War of the 1950s.

There are now articles online talking about the real possibility of North Korea "opening up"

They'll only be truly open when they've got a McDonalds there.

This article gives me hope, they basically make out that Kim wants to be North Korea's Deng Xiaoping

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the ... 3d258700a5

Kim, who has god-like status among his people, has in effect told them four things:
1) The nukes program has served its purpose, and we will stop work on it now.
2) All efforts will focus on making you rich, like the Chinese and South Koreans.
3) I have started a new era of Korean history by reaching out to the South.
4) Our nukes have tamed the Yankees, and now I am going to trade them for permanent security and leverage to make you rich.

Third, China-style economic reform that assures Kim’s control of the regime and establishes rapid development as his source of legitimacy instead of resistance against the U.S. bogeyman.

Essentially this would involve freedom of movement of people and being open to foreign businesses.

That’s not true, McDonald’s are always there first.
