Pompeo's just gonna ignore all the concentration camps, then? Cool.

North Korea opening up would mean putting and end to the camps.

If you threaten to take Kim to a tribunal regarding past human rights abuses then there's no way to make progress.

The big problem is convincing North Korea to open up with guaranteeing the current regime's security.

The only way to achieve this is to take a long term approach to regime change. Let them open up their borders, experience civilisation and all the cool things the West has to offer, really let them see what they've been missing out on. Let South Korea slowly put roots in the North, bringing jobs, education and prosperity. Do this for 10-15 years. Then once everyone is used to (and reliant upon) the new way of life, take out Kim and his regime and install a more democratic government, giving people free elections. After a decade or 2 of enjoying a more prosperous life his formerly-brainwashed followers will be less resistant to him getting the chop.

I'm not convinced that they're even really talking about giving up the bombs. They're going to close down a test site for a drop in sanctions. That said it's probably a good move, and hopefully when they're importing from western countries we can start putting pressure on them to be nicer to their people. I have a feeling this will all fall apart soon, though.

Ideally they should follow China's opening up in the 80s. The problem here is that this is mostly the same regime that has ruled the country for over half of a century, unlike Mao's death where he was openly criticised (Mao's own wife was sentenced to death for her part in the Cultural Revolution) and his policies reversed by Deng Xiaoping, Kim Jong-un's reign has been pretty much business as usual so far.

The North Korean regime, being a permanent dictatorship, look decades into the future, if they can see a scenario where they're brought to justice for their crimes then they'll do everything in their power to prevent that.

Guess they're not doing denuclearization any more. :fp:

Doesn't look likely that UN inspectors will be allowed in to ensure compliance, either.

North Korea's going to become a permanent nuclear state. I can't see Japan remaining non-nuclear.

Let's dance in style, let's dance for a while
Heaven can wait we're only watching the skies
Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst
Are you gonna drop the bomb or not?

I think it's faulty logic to assume that economic prosperity will always lead to democracy, as China and other dictatorships have shown. An improved economy gives the state more resources to opress people, and as it would be bad for business if there was a revolution other countries are more willing to supoort dictatorships since their own economies are now tied together.

Also, sadly, I think a lot of people just don't care that much about democracy, or human rights in general as long as they are doing reasonably well.

North Korea has cancelled Wednesday's high-level talks with South Korea because of anger over its joint military exercises with the US.

The North's official KCNA news agency said the exercises were a "provocation" and a rehearsal for an invasion.

It also warned the US over the fate of the historic summit between Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump that is scheduled for 12 June.

In March, Mr Trump stunned the world by accepting an invitation to meet Mr Kim.

"We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!" the US leader tweeted at the time.

The US State Department said it was continuing to prepare for the Trump-Kim summit and that it was not aware of any changes in the North Korean position.

Going awry...

These exercises happen every year, do they not? They've been the source of periods of severe tension in recent years.
