Apparently, all they want is to be recognised as a nuclear power. So sooner or later the governments will relent; accept that NK is a nuclear power and insist they stop dicking around. NK regime will gleefully accept and live off the victory for decades to come. Meanwhile the people of NK will continue to suffer and the rotw will go on with our lives.

I wonder if China are looking at this from a view that the United States would potentially have to dial down their military presence in South East Asia if North Korea did have the capability to launch nuclear weapons.

I hope I never live to see nuclear conflict. Even if Europe never got hit the economic domino effect if we lost say Tokyo or Seoul would be unthinkable. Just thinking about it makes me want to go and watch a comedy film or something.

It's not a comedy.

I think we should create a Threads drinking game. It can play a double duty for when we have an actual nuclear war.

A Republican Senator telling the BBC yesterday that an American military strike against North Korea was "inevitable" if something doesn't change.

'I'm assuming the worst. Im assuming we drop one bomb, he fires at South Korea and maybe Japan. There will be thousands of deaths...'

I don't think that's the worst outcome. Although it sounds pretty bad.

North Korea isn't going to stop testing Nuclear weapons. I don't see this ending in any way other than war. It's just a matter of when.

The US isn't going to do diddly squat because
1) North Korea has nukes
2) China is their ally and they also have nukes

Sadly nothing will change for the North Koreans until there's a revolution, and sadly that probably will not happen until there is a revolution in China.

As long as NK only continue to test weapons then I don't think the US will do anything about it. Obviously a lot of voices there want to take NK out but they are in a situation ow where whatever preemptivel attack the US do it will likely result in significant deaths in SK.

It's been reported that they are preparing another missile.

I guess this post is a 'no gooseberry fool Sherlock' moment.

There really doesn't seem to be any good solutions to this.

Invading/attacking them will lead to unimaginable death.

Letting them carry on will probably eventually lead to unimaginable death.

I guess the only hope is to somehow get China onside to help take Kim's regime out, but I can't see China wanting to get actively involved - the risk to them of millions of starving refugees will put them off. China will also worry about the US "taking control" or at least having a US leaning unified Korea on their doorstep.

It's a mess and I don't think it's going to get better.

They aren't going to use a nuke anytime soon as it basically would be a suicide strike. They've wanted nuclear capabilities for years in order to be self-sufficient. They've been able to strike Seoul and Tokyo for some time now, with fairy devastating non-nuclear weaponry but have always been vulnerable to American aggression.

They've wanted to be a nuclear power so they have a bargaining ploy. The whole region is a Mexican standoff whereas previously NK were only able to point to a few others in this stalemate, they'll soon be able to hit America too.

For Americans, and arguably I reckon some quarters would trade a strike on Seoul for an end to the Kim regime, it's a lot different when it's not some far off Asian capital in their sights but LA or somewhere.

It's basically a Cold War situation again. NK want nukes as an defensive weapon, to protect and uphold its regime from outside pressure.

One solution which someone must surely have thought of, is why don't America basically say they'll withdraw from the entire peninsula if the area's unified in the South's favour? The big problem is that China don't fear NK, as there's always going to be about four other enemies ahead of them in any pecking order.

That would require a dictator willingly giving up their power. Has that ever happened in the history of the world?

Some kind of 'expert' the other day on the news suggested that the best option would be to kill Kim Jong-un and then effectively have China manage the country and gradually bring it into line and onto a more 'reasonable' path. How that would work though, at any level, I don't know. Sounds good though.

Apparently China really aren't happy with North Korea and I thinking about cutting off their oil supply.
