Rez is a bit gooseberry fool though isn't it.

Fabian Delph is a banana split.

That's a pretty ballsy claim

Is it?

I'm not saying that Mario isn't important to Nintendo, just that Halo is more important to MS. Nintendo have other franchises in a way that MS can't really match.

I don't think Nintendo having other successful franchises can justify your statement. No matter which way you look at it.

In purely financial terms. I don't think I have to prove MS are significantly larger than Nintendo but just to give an idea of scale: as of this year Microsoft have assets worth $193.69billion. Nintendo have assets worth $12.46billion. By 2012 the Mario franchise alone was valued at $10billion. They've sold over 500million copies of Mario games. Halo can't compete here.

MS can release an Xbox however they like. A Nintendo release with no Mario game is considered "wrong". The share price drops when they do this.

Take Halo away from history and maybe the original XBox does less well. Take Mario away and gaming history is very, very different.

Nintendo have Zelda and Pokémon (although I understand that's a separate company) and to a lesser extent they have Donkey Kong, Metroid, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Star Fox etc.

Microsoft have Forza and Gears of War. Mario games might have sold more copies, but then they've been around a lot longer and available on more platforms.

I'd argue that if it wasn't for Halo, MS might not even be in the console business any more.

I'd argue that if it wasn't for Mario - we wouldn't even have a console business. Not the one we know and love. Mario was the big system seller for NES. He's the iconic figure for Nintendo and is synonymous with them and their success. Their success led to the creation of SNES and the Playstation (initially alongside Ninty and then in direct opposition to them) and that enormous success led to MS wanting a piece of the action. Halo helped get them that and helped get them to where they are now. No question. But the modern console market began fully with Nintendo and Mario is inseparable from that.

When MS start making Halo Tennis, Halo Soccer, Halo Golf, Dr Halo, Halo Kart, Halo Whateverthefuckelse then maybe the Halo franchise will be as important to MS as Mario is to Nintendo.

You laugh, but this kind of thing isn't out of the realms of possibility. Fable Coin Golf, for example.
