Checking comments on news sites is great, no matter how bad I feel I'll never be as pessimistic as that lot.

It does make me feel depressed sometimes. I enjoy reading the news but it is sad to constantly learn about so much misery, suffering and hatred in what can and should be such a beautiful world.

This is something i've been realising over the past year or so, although i think it being published in the guardian is a bit disingenuous. Newspapers and news sites aren't your friends, they want to outrage and goad you into boosting their ad revenue or social media metrics by saying whatever it takes to do so.

I absolutely have that cynical and desensitised attitude towards everything, partly from being fed a constant stream of depressing and massive bullshit i can do nothing about. I'm definitely seeing blissful ignorance to most of what goes on in the world as a perfectly reasonable alternative.

When i was younger i always ignored the news, i found it quite depressing and just annoying. I think when i hit about mid twenties i got into watching the news and following politics more but now in the last 3 years roughly my watching of the news has dropped to a minimal amount of watching, i pretty much have a quick check on a news site for 5 mins and then watch sky news or something like that for 15 mins and i'm done. I found i have enough going on in my life that needs my attention and in my spare time i'd rather watch or do something more fun and upbeat. Even on twitter i started removing lots of people who generally just moan and try and push their opinions on everyone else. Ignorance really is bliss for me i guess.

Honestly the news is just depressing, because there's no reason to ever report good things. Good things do not generate traffic. Nobody reports on how everything is ok, how someone was in a big car crash and survives. Only bad things get reported.

I still look at it, but the news and especially comments now just make me hate where I live and everyone around me. I've done my best to stop following it as much.

Yeah the news is definitely something that falls into the 'ignorance is bliss' category. So much of it we just don't need to know. It really feels like a lot of it is there to just fill air time/column inches/get clicks. I consider myself pretty up to date with what's going on in the world (I watch the BBC news every night, read a couple of papers (the Daily Telegraph and 'I' ) if I get time, check out the Guardian most days, the World News section on Reddit, listen to 5 Live most days, etc) but very little of what I see, hear or read has any bearing on my life, yet all it does is make you feel like gooseberry fool (not me personally, but I can imagine it grinds people down). I frequently turn it off because it's just saying stuff might happen, and a lot of the time it feels like its purpose is to worry people rather than inform them about things that have genuine impact or relevance.

On the BBC news last night they were banging on about dry rivers, potential droughts, etc, and even though every authority on the matter said there was no risk of a drought or a hose pipe ban, and that although it was unusual there was nothing to worry about, the BBC were adamant that there MIGHT be a problem (almost willing it to happen) and the underlying tone was one of 'have you heard about this? are you worried about it? if you're not you should be? OMG water drought!'.

They were also waffling about Macron;

Huw Edwards: Ooh Macron, he's young and nobody knows what his presidency will be like. I've been speaking to some French people about this.
French people: Ooh Macron, he's young and nobody knows what his presidency will be like.
Huw Ewards: Let's speak to our France correspondent about this.
Correspondent: Ooh Macron. As you said in your report Huw, he's young and nobody knows what his presidency will be like.

So much repetition, so much talking without saying anything, so much unnecessary waffle. It just sums up the news in general.

Watch the news at 6pm or 10pm and then you'll know what is going on. Absolutely pointless watching the rolling gooseberry fool. It just same headlines over and over.

Yep this was the 10pm news. Guess it was a particularly slow news day.

I don't check any rolling news. I wait for an article after everythings finished to catch up. I agree most news is garbage. Any opinion piece is going to have a 90%chance of being wrong.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.
