I ask, as Black Flag was AC4 and also linked with 3 and Rouge.

Yes. You’re right. Freedom Cry.

My apologies.

I meant spin-off more in a sense that it took a sub-section of 3 and span it off into its own game. Black Flag and Rogue are still sort of own their own in terms of their focus on a nautical setting too (though Origins did have one or two ship missions I think).

Though I would wager though that Black Flag didn't start life as AC 4, given there was only a year between it and 3, compared to the 2 and 3 years between the previous numbered sequels.

EDIT - Thought that was about my comment that "Black Flag span-off 3's naval parts".

A protagonist that you can play as - Kassandra (female) or Alexios (male).

My thoughts exactly.

Aren't all same gen sequels a reskin to some degree?

Origins is still one of the best looking games around so it's not a bad thing from that point of view, my problem is that the narrative and dialogue will be absolute garbage again.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying it's completely a bad thing that it's a reskin. I really enjoyed Origins and so it sharing many of its mechanics (if that happens to be the case) will mean that I am more quickly able to get into it and enjoy myself, but that familiarity could also turn into a negative, as it did with me with the latest Far Cry.

Parksey wrote:It's a weird one. Even when the games were annual, they were still different enough to avoid being called a reskin. Black Flag was spun off from 3's naval combat but had its own identity. Unity took it back to a big singular city and Syndicate was hardly a carbon copy of that game. The all had a slightly different interface, control scheme or whatever.

This one looks exactly like Origins. Unlike the other annual entries, which were developed concurrently and by different teams, I wouldn't be surprised if they've just rapidly knocked this out after Origins got a lot of plaudits. They couldn't resist the money involved in going back to annual release, clearly.

I think Parksey's nailed it with that.

I totally agree with you, it's just that 'reskin' is nearly always used as a pejorative.

Parksey did indeed, nail it.

This series is a bloody mess, isn't it? Time was, you could at least count on the next game relating somewhat to the last, chronologically. Now we don't even have that.

Reboot it in the heyday of Babylon, the Hittite Empire etc and move forward from there, through Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas. If this were my property I would demand it.

I’ll get this when it’s half price, it may be a slight evolution on Origins but that’s ok for me.

I love Origins, but I waited for that to be on sale. AC games usually drop in price pretty quickly after release, it’s always worth hanging on a month or two.

Still waiting for Origins to hit that magic 20 quid mark.

Origins was almost certainly the best game of 2017, so the fact that this looks to be more of the same is a good thing as far as i'm concerned.

I still haven't even completed Origins yet as I thought we'd have a years break of AC. Will certainly go for this but only in the sales.

Damn, I meant to buy the gold edition yesterday so it would start downloading. Suppose I won’t get to play it until tomorrow evening though, so there’s still time.

Metacritic score currently at 87, a lot higher than I was expecting. Still bored of this series, mind you.

I do really want to buy this but it’s too close to Red Dead Redemption 2, so I think I will leave this until Christmas.

I'm a little surprised at the very positive reception this has gained... it sounds terrific.
