Not Tonight: Papers Please meets Brexit

"Person of European Heritage #112: Welcome to Relocation Block B, your new home. Your designated role is 'Bouncer'. Work hard, stay out of trouble, and we might let you stay in the UK."

Like it says on the tin, Not Tonight casts you as a Bouncer, judging whether various revellers are fit to enter your employer's bar. It also tasks you with surviving as a European immigrant in a post-No Deal Brexit UK run by the far right Albion First party.

It's getting some...interesting buzz; it's already been review bombed on GoG and the Kotaku article concerning its themes has been invaded by commenters of a fascistic nature but, needless to say, I'm strawberry floating intrigued. Paper's Please was just too depressing for me and I became overwhelmed by its tone after a few hours. This seems to be a little more lighthearted, if still towards the cynical end of the spectrum. Downloading it as I type

I am sure this thread will go well and all discussion will be calm and limited only to the game itself.

;)

Whoever the few bonkers Brexiteers are on here will, I'm sure, make themselves known.

Had a little play, made a few impressions:

- It really is just Papers Please. Like, a shameless rip off.
- It's very pretty
- The way the characters talk, like a southern English take on Simlish, is very charming
- It's got a surprisingly good soundtrack (not that you can hear most of it, what with you being stuck outside each bar most of the night)
- Outside the first bar is a big purple "strawberry float UKIP" sign. I like this.

I did quite enjoy Papers Please so I'll probably check this out, but I think I'll wait for a sale first.

It's definitely interesting for its theme but it just looks horribly derivative of Papers Please in gameplay. To the point where I kind of feel ashamed for looking at it.

It is 100% Paper's Please. They've added some bits, there's parts where you're not working set in your flat, but the actual gameplay is identical.

It's great though.

Is it at least made by the same company or has the guy ripped off someone elses idea, tacked on an "edgy/relevant" setting, and tried to pass it off as his own invention? :dread:

It's a completely different developer.

It's not made by the same company.
One of the devs (of this) has an account on ResetEra I think.

I'm of two minds about this. On one hand it just seems like an asset swap, which is bad. On the other hand the backgrounds and such look unique, so maybe it's ok?

I mean there are loads of FPS that follow the same mechanics but you wouldn't really complain about them being rip offs?

It is such a blatant rip off though. I think the difference is that Papers Please is a very niche title that was cool but nothing trend setting, whereas Doom was absolutely revolutionary when it released and really was an obvious template for its genre. Even back then, a lot of games were referred to as "Doom clones" but this particular game really seems like a shameless rip off more than anything.
