Unlike most of you, I can remember a time when we only had 3 terrestrial channels and nothing good on TV was a pretty common occurrence. Over the following years we got more terrestrial channels, digital, Sky, Netflix, Amazon and of course catch up for all of those programmes you never wanted to watch in the first place.

The problem now is that there is too much good TV to watch. I normally watch about 1.5 - 2 hours of TV per day and this means that there is far too much content to fill the available time and a number of series I'd like to watch fall by the wayside meaning I have to be selective on what to watch.

Much like this topic, I don't know where this is going but I suppose my questions are do you think there is now too much choice and is this choice really a good thing?

Yes?

I think it's similar to having too many games. I don't have a TV license and only watch Netflix and occasionally 4oD. I take a somewhat nihilistic approach to this anxiety machine. I know stuff isn't going to be listed forever so if I forget about it or don't catch up, that's fine, I just let myself forget about it and move onto something else. I try to finish watching a particular series, sure, but my mood affects what I want to watch all the time. Often for some reason like I had no internet for 2 months, or got distracted by something new, I forget about is or that show or miss the appearance of something entirely. I try not to let it bother me.

It's FOMO at work. I think you have to find a good balance between discovering new things and trusting in curation (be that through friend's recommendations or whatever else), and be willing to drop things if you're not feeling them for whatever reason.

Even despite all the extra channels, some nights there's still naff all to watch.

It's not too bad for me at the moment though as i get Paddington Station 24/7, Gotham, The 100, Ghost Adventures, and whatever nostalgia/countdown show Channel 5 rolls out on a sunday night.

Is TV better nowadays when compared with the 4 channel era? It's difficult to say, but i do know that generally, there seemed to be more good quality original programming back then on the channels we had as there was nowhere else to screen anything new (80's/90's kids TV in particular was absolutely amazing). I think things really began to change when Sky arrived, as time went on they started nicking more and more of the best shows which then began to dilute terrestrial TV's quality (and the arrival of digital terrestrial continued that trend). Yes there is more choice now, but most of the time the extra choices are absolute balls, and a lot of the channels just repeat the same old shows on a perpetual loop.

I must say though that i preferred the old system when it came to F1 coverage, as Sky's greed and general buggery have screwed over UK viewers to a ridiculous level.

I always have stuff to watch. Or I will rewatch things. I've lost count of how many times I've seen I'm Alan Partridge or Father Ted.

I very rarely watch TV as it's being broadcast, almost everything I watch is via a streaming service (Netflix or Amazon), bought on disc or 'acquired' online.

I don't watch sports, soaps or reality TV shite so there's very little on the main 4/5 terrestrial TV channels that interests me and most other freeview channels aren't worth bothering with as they're basically an endless loop of ads for life insurance, online casinos, comparison websites and toothpaste, oh I forgot the incontinence underwear and vaginal moisturiser.

I tend to watch a lot of sport, news, travelogues (Rick Stein for example, and Michael Portillo in India recently was superb), current affairs and documentaries. Live specials whenever they turn up (Eurovision, Glastonbury), and probably around 8-10 movies a year. The by product of this being I rarely watch much drama at all (though I think you could argue 24 Hours in Police Custody is the best drama on TV at the moment).

All the Amazon, Netflix and Sky Atlantic stuff basically passes me by completely. Many, many years later I watched The Sonpranos because everyone was talking about it therefore I thought 'well I MUST watch it'. Same with 24 (I watched series 1, 2 and the one in London).

I do quite like cop shows (Leathal Weapon, NCIS, Hawaii Five O, Gotham, Death in Paradise) in which you can turn your brain off for 50 minutes or whatever but I don't make a huge effort to watch them. They sit on my Sky box and I'll dip in and out of them throughout the year sporadically.

Since Lewis and Poirot finished I can go months at a time without watching ITV. In fact there is actually more things on Channel 5 worth watching these days, incredibly.

I used to watch soaps (Eastenders and Neighbours) but I stopped completely many years ago. If it was on once or twice a week I'd maybe still watch it but at 4 hours every week you can forget it. I can create my own drama, it's called life, I don't need to know about Ian Beale's strawberry floating chip shop.

I don't watch much on the terrestrial channels but I have a continual backlog on the streaming services. So much stuff to watch!

The only TV I really watch now is live sport and quiz shows. Rest is streaming

We always settle down and stick the regular TV on, but it's not long before we declare there to be nothing on and skip straight to Netflix. Thankfully DML's show is back on next week, that always fits the bill as a casual show.

I rarely watch regular TV as it's mostly garbage and only have a small handful of shows on Netflix I like to watch.

Generally I prefer to play a video game or watch a movie.

All the good stuff moved to Netflix, Amazon and Now TV.

The likes of ITV and Channel 4 are in their death throes, at least if younger people's viewing habits continue.

I don't use any of those as my connection simply isn't fast enough to stream them at a decent resolution (and i can't afford fibre).

A lot of the big shows (such as Game of Thrones and the like) i watch on disc, though sadly, i don't think Stranger Things will ever come out on a physical format (even though other netflix shows such as The Crown, Daredevil, and 13 Reasons Why have all had disc releases).

Watching The Bridge 4, Handmade’s Tale, Montelbano plus others. There’s loads of stuff on terrestrial. No idea why people need Sky, Netflix etc.
