PostNow TV
by Captain Kinopio » Mon Mar 23, 2015 7:43 pm

I'm sure there must be a thread about this already so please direct me there if so because I couldn't find it.

Since cancelling my Virgin Media mega to bundle I'm missing some of the stuff I send to watch regularly like the Daily Show, but because there were really only 1 or 2 channels on the super bundle I had that I actually watched I have no desire to go back because it was crazy expensive.

I've taken to perusing Now TV because with GOT around the corner it seemed like a good cheap way to get a few more options on my TV without a big arse contract and complex cancellation issues. Having just seen that I could also get the Daily Show back as well I think I'm on to a winner and will almost certainly jump in.

I have a query though about recording tv with it, as far as I can tell there's no record function on the box but you can catch up on stuff? I can't see what this applies to though, if I wanted to watch the Daily Show but didn't want to sit down every day at a certain time to do so is there a way for me to do this with Now TV or not.

Anyone able to clue me in on this and any other pros or cons or experiences with it?

:D

There is no recording but should have access to a good deal of stuff on catch up.

Bear in mind unless you're watching through Apple TV the service is not currently in HD (720p) for Live streaming. It's coming later in the year.

I know Sky's stuff is on-demand, but I'm not sure about Comedy Central.

Yeah 720p is fine for me, just want to know about catch up on Comedy Central.

Tbh I'll probably get it anyway because it's so cheap but it'd be nice to no what I can do with it before hand.

I'm positive Sky have delayed it for so long, and hampered the frame rate, so as not to undercut their main satellite offering.

Also worth noting some US shows are blacked out on NowTV due to ridiculous rights issues. Worth regularly checking out http://community.nowtv.com

But apart from AppleTV the service isn't 720p. I'd say the current streaming quality isn't even broadcast standard.

Now tv is decent. Bunch of strawberry floating mugs won't offer a monthly sports pass though will they. :|

Fabian Delph is a banana split.

Fun fact, not even SKY Satellite HD broadcasts at 1080p

The highest they go is 1080i.

Isn't the reason Sky satellite isn't 1080p because the Satellite can't do that? Even if it could, recordings in 1080p would be ridiculously huge and even a 2TB box would fill up pretty quick if you were recording films.

Yup.

Another fantastic feature of the 'service' that rupert is happy to fleece me for.

There's a 4K box on the horizon soonish. Not sure how Sky will be delivering it though. And it'll probably cost about £300.

With BT having the Champions League in 4K though their broadband, Sky are sure to do something (expensive).

I'd love this but I can't see them doing it any time soon given how important selling the sports packages are in their subscriptions. Imagine the price they would charge for it if they are already charging £9.99 for one day :dread: I'm still surprised they let you have it for £4.99 per month on mobiles. I used to get the Sky Go monthly ticket with the sports channels for £35 per month but there was a lot of stuff not available for streaming for "legal reasons" and there was too much rugby and cricket shite on the sports channels to make it worth the money.

If you don't wish to spend more though, at least Sky Sports is actually cheaper to watch through NowTV at £43.96 a month with no contract compared to the cheapest option through Sky being £47 a month, installation fees (currently £10) and a 12 month contract. Of course you do get the entertainment channels too with a Sky sub.

If you have the audacity to want it in High Definition however then it's over £60.

Oh I didn't realise they had changed the prices. Day pass for £6.99 and week pass fro £10.99.

Ahh ok, I don's use my NowTV boxes for sky stuff anyway, I use a little bot of BBC iPlayer but mostly they are just media streamer boxes for Plex as you can side load the Plex app on to them.

That is a big change in pricing for the sports

When my sky contract is up I'm cancelling and going to give this a go. The wife spends as much time on my ps4 watching Amazon prime as i do gaming on it

6.99 a month for the entertainment pack is a big difference from my current sky contract

For sport? yeah they have, although they say it is a limited time thing. I want to be a permanent as the only thing I have Sky for is the F1 so week passes would work great for me.

I'm tempted to go for the entertainment pack for the Geordie Shore boxed set and when Game of Thrones starts again but I'll probably just end up pirating that since it won't be in HD.
