My cpu is an old i5 3570k Ivy Bridge. Running a 970, does the job. But would a third gen intel CPU be a bottleneck with say an RTX 2070?

Modern game developers can't program collision detection or gameplay so having realtime raytracing in there seems a long way off practically speaking. There might even be an original idea.

Seriously it takes an age for engines to perform remotely well just like HDR, SSAO or whatever the last thing is.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

I don't get your point, they just showed it running in a bunch of games coming out in the next few months. Its already in games.

I'm sure as the technology matures it'll get better, but that's the same with anything.

A promotional video claiming a feature has been paid to be featured in 3 games is hardly a sign that it's going to be widely utilised or utilised well. Ray Tracing won't be a feature for anyone but the hardcore PC gaming enthusiast for a long time and certainly won't feature on next gen consoles and given most games are developed with them in mind I can't see it being a common feature any time soon.

With even the cheapest card using the feature being almost £600 I can't exactly see many gamers rushing to buy these and that's if the miners don't just buy them all anyway.

Also, those scene weren't fully Ray traced, just individual aspects. Seems like this will be like other current Nvidia tech, like hairworks or that particle system, used in small circumstances - at least for the time being.

Not sure you can say that.

Granted at the moment it doesn't seem likely, but you don't know what graphics solution the next MS and Sony consoles will have. Its not impossible they'll have an Nvidia RTX part in them.

Wow, that's worse than I thought it would be. It'll be interesting when there are decent comparisons to see how much Ray tracing will be in an average scene and how much of a difference it makes.

Welp:

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/1 ... -gtx-1080/

Nvidia's RTX 2070 seems to be only slightly faster than a GTX 1080

BUT

The RTX 2070 is set to cost upwards of £459

1080s are still going for more than that...

Its not a good design though the bower style cards run hot and are generally not well thought of.

That's a pretty good price tbh. Now for the benchmarks.

It was more the point that prices have dropped below the RTX 2070

My point was that that price for that particular 1080 is more of an anomaly at the moment, for a very undesirable version of the 1080, not really a great comparison and despite the previous posts, we still don't really know what the 2070 cards are going to end up selling for.

Its a bit early to start trying to see which card is the best value. I can see it easily being the case that you won't be able to get your hands on a 2070 for less than £500, if the pricing of the 2080 is anything to go by.

For what it's worth, I simply googled 1080 and choose an example that was around the median price point on Amazon.

On a slightly different note, were you saying you think that makes the 2070 price ok (if it does turn out to be around £459)?

Its a significant price hike over any previous 'XX70' range card.

I am thinking the 2070 could be as high as £550.

Noooo, not at all. I was trying to come at it with the angle that the 2070 was £100s more than the 1080 for essentially the same power, but then the first 1080 I found was actually more expensive and I ended up reversing my point!

I think it just goes to show how utterly ridiculous GFX card prices are these days. All over the shop.

Soooo... which card should I buy? I'm not a miner (whatever that is), but I do want VR and 4K for as little as possible.
